About the Author
WILLIAM STRONG directs the Utah Writing Project at Utah State University, where he teaches courses in writing, English education, and content-area literacy. Besides authoring many articles and teaching resources on sentence combining and writing, he is the consulting author in composition for Writers Choice (Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, 2001) and series consultant for English Matters! (Grolier, 2000).

Mark Lester is an experienced grammarian, ESL expert, and professor emeritus of Eastern Washington University. He was the founding chairperson of the ESL department at the University of Hawaii, considered one of the best ESL programs in the United States. He is the author of more than a dozen books, including "Grammar and Usage in the Classroom", one of the most widely used college grammar textbooks in the country. For McGraw-Hill Professional, he authored McGraw-Hill's "Essential ESL Grammar" and with Larry Beason he coauthored "The McGraw-Hill Handbook of English Grammar and Usage". Dr. Lester obtained his BA in philosophy and English literature at Pomona College and his PhD in Linguistics from University of California-Berkeley. He also holds an MBA from the University of Hawaii.

Daniel Franklin and Terry Yokota are the producers of McGraw-Hill's Big Book of Verbs series and are experts at creating effective language acquisition texts--editing and authoring references, grammars, and textbooks for learners of Chinese, English, French, Italian, Latin, German, Polish, Russian, and Spanish. Franklin obtained a BA in Latin at Eastern Illinois University and did graduate work in linguistics at Harvard University. Yokota obtained a BA and MA in Spanish language and literature at Washington University in St. Louis.

Short yet Concise, Informative Read for Communication and Business Majors

I purchased this book as part of the required reading for my message design class. It's a fairly light read, at least as far as college texts go. For the causal reader, I believe it is an informative book and given the upcoming elections (2016), might be helpful to dissect the clutter of information and misinformation. For any communication or business major, I would recommend it in addition for those already practicing in those fields at any level.
I give it 4 instead of 5 stars since I believe it could have expanded on some of the topics more. So this is more of a supplemental text to existing books on this topic.

We've all heard about a pride of lions or a pack of wolves, but do you know what a group of gorillas is called? In a manner similar to her What's New at the Zoo? (addition), What's the Difference? (subtraction), and Multiply on the Fly (multiplication), author Suzanne Slade uses rhyming verse to introduce youngsters to division facts as they also learn about what bunches of different kinds of animals are called. For instance, if you have twenty tough gorillas, and they all march off in five directions, how many will be in each band?
The first couple of pages point out that many animals spend a lot of time with their families and friends and then identify the names for many collections of common animals, such as a skulk of foxes and a dray of squirrels. In the back, a collective nouns matching activity, a "Where in the World" quiz, and a couple of pages with further information about division "For Creative Minds," can all be found, and there are even more activities and quizzes for The Great Divide at the publisher's website. Erin E. Hunter's illustrations are a great addition to this cross-cultural approach where children can bone up on their division in a setting where they can also study a little bit about nature.

Excellent beginner's dictionary

I have looked for an easy-to-use bi-directional Japanese-English dictionary for a long time and this is one of the best I have found. The dictionary is easy to use and packed full of informative commentary to help a beginner Japanese student who has a functioning knowledge of hiragana. Some people might criticize the book for being lacking in vocabulary, but as far as beginners go, I believe it to be a very useful and easy-to-use book.

Some pros:
1. Dictionary is bi-direction (has a J-E and E-J)
2. The Japanese stands out from the English with a very easy to see blue hiragana text, with the kanji characters next to them as well.
3. Easy to understand break-down of different types of Japanese verbs.
4. Dictionary entries have useful commentary for sayings, idiomatic expressions, etc. as they come up.
5. An excellent "Learning and Lifestyle" kit in the back of the dictionary gives a whole array of tools to help beginners (and anyone who is learning Japanese) a wide array of need-to-know words, cultural hints, kana charts, phrases, etc.
6. Dictionary is small and compact, but extensive. It fits nicely inside a backpack with the rest of your college books!

this is a great dictionary! i bought it because it includes really useful guides for traveling and quick phases - but also more importantly, because it doesn't include ANY romaji (yay), and it includes BOTH the hiragana/katakana + kanji versions of each word. it's really great for learning. the blue color coding is also nice on the eyes, and includes blue tips on the side for easily navigating through the alphabet. it's a dictionary + travel guide in one, and i can't stress enough how amazing it is that it doesn't JUST include the kanji (this helps with learning pronounciation via hiragana/katakana).

This was my favorite book back in the day, really helpful for learning Japanese. Has sentences and phrase along with complete dictionary. Really really thick book!!!
