About the Author
TIM WEITHERS, PhD, was one of the members of the Education Department of the O'Connor Partnership, a legendary proprietary option trading firm, which is now part of UBS. As a Managing Director of Financial Markets Education for UBS, he teaches thousands of clients and employees every year through seminars and internal classes, and serves as a faculty member of the Graduate Program on Financial Mathematics at The University of Chicago.

Very informative, very readable

This book was exactly what I needed. I was familiar with forex futures, and I wanted to break into the cash forex market and possibly into currency options. This book gave me a clear explanation of the markets, including the conventions, the mechanics, the spot market, forex swaps, forex options, etc., and some of the factors which drive exchange rates (e.g., interest rates).

The book is very readable. Usually, this sort of thing puts me to sleep. But I knocked off a chapter per day, no problem. The author is a member of the UBS training department, and he clearly has experience explaining this topic to the uninitiated.

The math is quite light. Nothing more complicated than algebra, which is necessary to explain some pricing logic.

The book does not contain trading secrets. It is not a system for trading forex. It does not explain How I Made $1,000,000 Trading Forex. It will not help you pick a broker. It is not an exposition on the stochastic theory of forex pricing. It is, however, a clear explanation of the FX markets.

Basic FX knowledge

The book is good for someone with no exposure to FX markets and for those who want to get a handle on things like how rates are quoted, why digital options make sense etc. The only gripe I have about this book is that it is an introduction to the topic, and not an advanced exposition on FX models, etc. Otherwise it is well written.

About the Author

Alice Rischert , formerly chair of Columbia University’s Database Application Development and Design program, has taught classes in Oracle SQL, PL/SQL, and database design to hundreds of students. How This Book Is Organized

Each chapter of this book is divided into labs covering particular topics. The objective of each lab is defined at its beginning, with brief examples that introduce you to the covered concepts.

Following the lab’s introductory examples are exercises, which are the heart of the lab. They reinforce and expand your knowledge of the subject. Each exercise consists of a series of steps to follow to perform specific tasks or particular questions that are designed to help you discover the important aspects of SQL. Oracle SQL Developer and SQL*Plus

You can perform most of the exercises in this book with Oracle’s SQL Developer or SQL*Plus software. Both software tools are included with the Oracle database and are part of the default installation.

SQL Developer is easier to use and offers a superior display of results. Because SQL Developer is a relatively new product and independent of the Oracle database release, you may find later versions of the software on Oracle’s Web site, as a separate product download.

The book’s screenshots and described functionality are based on SQL Developer 1.5.3. Although there may be significant changes in future versions, it would be a grave omission not to cover SQL Developer. This tool sets the future product direction and has many useful features to improve your productivity and enhance your SQL knowledge and skill set.

This book is not intended as a comprehensive SQL Developer book. Rather, the focus is SQL. You use SQL Developer as part of your interaction with the Oracle database. Therefore, you need to understand the basics of the tool within the context of SQL.

Oracle’s intended target audience for the SQL Developer tool is not only SQL users but also PL/SQL programmers. Therefore, you’ll find that menu options in this tool are related to PL/SQL. The purpose of this book is not to describe and point out every menu option but to teach you the SQL language. SQL Developer is a useful tool for executing SQL statements and helping you understand the effects of the commands. The coverage of SQL Developer’s core functionality is intended within the context of SQL.

Using the SQL Developer graphical user interface does not eliminate the need to know and understand the SQL language. SQL Developer is a productivity tool that makes you a more efficient and proficient user of the language. You still need to know and understand your actions, and the tools can eliminate some basic mistakes and alleviate some frustrations for a beginning user.

SQL*Plus has been part of Oracle since its early beginnings and will continue to be shipped with every installation and platform. It has such a long history and defined purpose in Oracle’s strategy that you cannot ignore SQL*Plus altogether. Therefore, you will gain some basic knowledge of this tool as part of the exercises in this book. This book points out the relevant differences between SQL Developer and SQL*Plus, and you will gain an appreciation for each tool’s inherent benefits. You can choose to perform most of the exercises in either tool, depending on your preference. Because the book cannot comprehensively cover both tools and the SQL language, it focuses on the SQL Developer and SQL*Plus features you will use most.

Instead of using SQL Developer or SQL*Plus, you can also use other SQL execution environments; a list of such environments is provided in Appendix H, “Resources.”

You need to have access to the Internet so that you can access the companion Web site, at http://www.informit.com/ph. Here you will find files that are necessary to install the sample STUDENT schema.

About the STUDENT Schema

Throughout this book, you access data from a sample schema called STUDENT, which contains information about a computer education program. The schema was designed to record data about instructors, courses, students, and their respective enrollments and grades.

After you download the installation files to create the schema within your Oracle database, you will be able to follow the exercises in the book. Chapter 1, “SQL and Data,” introduces you to the relational concepts necessary to read a schema diagram. Appendix D, “STUDENT Database Schema,” shows a graphical representation of the schema, and Appendix E, “Table and Column Descriptions,” lists descriptive information about each table and column.

Good reference book

I registed a SQL class at my local community college. The textbook recommeded by the college was over $200 and had a one and half star review. I decided to use this book for my SQL class. The teacher told me that without any IT background and without using the school's textbook I wouldn't be able to make it through the class. I not only made it through, but also got 4.0 for the class with skipping half of the classes. I relied on this book and self-study.

I rarely find a techical book that has just everything I would want.. this one has it, and more. It's "hands on" and example based, but the theory is clearly and orderly introduced. Presentation style is neither boring nor distracting. The author's tech skill are awe inspiring but she still manages to write excellent material for beginners. She really cares to teach, not to show off her skills and knowledge...
So if you really want to learn SQL, want to do it with no pain, lots and lots of practical examples and *solved exercises*, and also get some practice with on of the most used database platforms available.. well this is the book you want. Do yourself a favour and start here.
You might want to check out also:
Beginning Oracle SQL
especially if you would like to read something a little more "compact" and "theory oriented" that still has solved exercises.. but I really think that when it comes to learning SQL nothing is more valuable than lots and lots of practice and examples..my advice is read them both, you won't regret it.
The only reproach I can make to to author is that she still has not written an intermediate level text as a follow up of this awesome text!

About the Author
Mike Peng is the Jindal Chair of Global Business Strategy at the Jindal School of Management, University of Texas at Dallas. A National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award winner, Professor Peng is a fellow with the Academy of International Business and listed among Thomson Reuters' The World's Most Influential Scientific Minds. His recent research awards include the Journal of International Business Studies Decade Award (2015) and the Academy of Management Perspectives Best Impact Award (2014). He holds a bachelor's degree from Winona State University, Minnesota, and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Seattle. Prior to joining UT Dallas, Professor Peng was on the faculty at The Ohio State University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and University of Hawaii. In addition, he has held visiting or courtesy appointments in Australia, Britain, Canada, China, Denmark, Hong Kong, and Vietnam. This award-winning professor is widely regarded as one of the most prolific and influential scholars in global business, and he has garnered many research grants for his work. The United Nations and the World Bank have cited his work in major publications. Truly global in scope, his research focuses on firms' strategies in diverse regions such as Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, and North America. Great book. Used it for my international business course. Easy to understand. Reads kind of like a magazine. The chapters are short, but has all the main points. Review cards that you can tear out of the back of the book for each chapter. Best part is the price. Even new, it was about half the cost of some of my other books that were used.

Probably one of the best textbooks I’ve had to purchase it was an easy read to study for exams. The Textbook is also extremely affordable so I was expecting a raggidy textbook, but it was in good condition and it even included review cards for every chapter at the back of the textbook.

Danny and the Deep Blue Sea

In this time of politically correct language and the sexes being afraid to speak for fear of being accused of sexual harrassment, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea is crudely refreshing, if not humbling. Danny and Roberta are the kinds of people that the BMW and Lexus set pass, with out the slightest awareness of the lives some people lead. Danny and Roberta both struggle with their demons and on this one night, in which the play takes place, they hold an emotional exorsism. Both emotionally handicaped, both blunt, almost vulgar in their use of the english language, find each other and begin to heal the wounds...in their own way. For one night, a porch light becomes the moon, two people beyond innocence become innocent again, and both find a few hours of unconditional love. J. Shanley doesn't make Danny and Roberta overnight, insightful psychologist. He lets them use their insticts,---guts. They touch each other because they are not fancy people. They are simple and the answers to their healing are simple.

One of my all-time favorite plays!

I love this play. It's a wonderful showcase piece for actors as well since it only has two characters. It's raw, brutal, funny, sweet and both characters are wonderfully flawed and lovable in their unique ways. As with all John Patrick Shanley plays, the characters are richly full of "stuff" that makes actors want to play them.

An Extensive Reference

This is the second volume in The Cambridge History of Japan, covering from the founding of Heian-kyo in 794 to the Gimpei clan wars of 1185 and the rising dominance of the warrior class. Arguably, these are the formative years for Japanese culture and social structure. Many of the subtle forms of governance that endured into modern times were entrenched at this time. Art and religion flourished as well (this was the period in which The Tale of Genji was written).
The Heian era, marked by a tremendous amount of formative activity, are crucial to understanding all that followed. This text is as exhaustive a record and analysis of those times as any reader would ever want. The chapters are written by individual experts in their fields and cover key aspects of history, politics, sociology, religion, and art. If anything, the worst criticism of this text is that the amount of information provided is overwhelming.
Casual history buffs beware. Don't expect an easy to read narrative. The intended reader is either academic or deeply interested. The kind of person who doesn't mind information overload and who is willing to take the time to put all the pieces of the picture into place. It may be important to understand rice politics, but, for the average reader, the subject lacks the glitter of the Heian court and the conflicts that forged modern Japan.
Of course, this is intended to be a reference book as much as a history, which accounts for the dryness of some of the writing. But as a reference book it really shines - I have yet to look for something and not be able to find material. For the right reader, the book is well worth its steep price.

It's the most detail publication on Heain era in Japan!

If one is looking for a manual that can help him/her understand historical events in Heian period (794-1185) then this is the book. It brings to you in detail the system of government (copying China's Tchang dynasty model), introduction of new Buddhist sects to Japan (Tendai, Shingon) and the life / culture at the Imperial Court in Heiankyo (contemporary capital). What may scare one off is the price but if you're either deeply interested in Japan's history or want to know more than you can find in the general popular history books then be sure to add this piece to your bookself and it will bring the Heain Japan to your reading chair. Index and glossary are practically arranged.

The Most Comprehensive English History of the Heian Period

This is an outstanding reference for anyone interested in Heian Japan. I don't recommend it as an introduction to the era, for that I would rely on a more narrative history like George Sansom's "A History of Japan to 1334" or Ivan Morris' "The World of the Shining Prince," but as an add-on to something like that, this book is excellent. It is made up of a series of articles by noted experts, each article covering some aspect of Heian period life. They do a good job of covering almost every aspect of the period. I am working on a novel set in Japan in the late Heian, and I found the articles on rural life and the shoen particularly interesting.

There is also material here that I have never seen anywhere else. My novel takes place during the Hogen rebellion, a brief conflict between two factions of the Imperial family vying for control of the throne. The principals in the conflict were the Junior Retired Emperor Sutoku and his brother, Emperor Go-Shirakawa. The roots of the conflict lay in the choices of their father, the Senior Retired Emperor Toba. As the Senior Retired Emperor, he wielded enormous influence on the government. In fact, he forced his son, Sutoku, to retire as emperor so as to put another son, Konoe, on the throne. Sutoku resented this. When Konoe died, it was assumed that Sutoku's oldest son would become Emperor, but Toba put Go-Shirakawa on instead. This increased Sutoku's discontent.

When Toba died, Sutoku gathered soldiers in an effort to overthrow Go-Shirakawa. He was ultimately unsuccessful, but the event marks the beginning of the ascendancy of the warrior class in Japanese governmental affairs.

Now, all of this is very inside baseball, and even though I have studied it fairly extensively, I always had a hard time trying to determine the motivations here. It was never very clear as to why Toba seemed so intent on ensuring that Sutoku never gained power. While I was looking through the section on the Hogen Rebellion in The Cambridge History of Japan, I came across a casual mention of the fact that, in the Imperial Court, it was widely believed that Toba was mocked about the parentage of his son, Sutoku. When Toba was a child, the chief power in the government was his grandfather, Retired Emperor Shirakawa. Shirakawa placed Toba on the throne when Toba was 4 years old. At age 14, Shirakawa arranged for Toba to marry a girl of 16 who Shirakawa had adopted as his daughter. She soon gave birth to a son. It was widely believed that the father of that child was not Toba, but his grandfather, Shirakawa. When the child was 4 years old, Sutoku forced Toba off the throne and had the boy enthroned as Emperor Sutoku. Shirakawa was very close to the young emperor, and favored him over his grandson, Toba. This explains Toba's enmity towards Sutoku and his efforts to cut him off from any chance at power.

I have been studying Japanese history for years, and I have read a lot about the Heian period. The Cambridge History of Japan is the only place I have seen this information even alluded to. Since I am using the Hogen Rebellion as the backdrop for a novel, you can imagine how delighted I was to come across a story like this. Never in a thousand years would I have thought of a situation this tawdry and scandalous. It adds immensely to the backstory of the novel. But, if it weren't for the Cambridge History of Japan, I never would have discovered it.
