The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos, by Brian Greene

The bestselling author of The Elegant Universe and The Fabric of the Cosmos tackles perhaps the most mind-bending question in modern physics and cosmology: Is our universe the only universe?

There was a time when "universe" meant all there is. Everything. Yet, a number of theories are converging on the possibility that our universe may be but one among many parallel universes populating a vast multiverse. Here, Briane Greene, one of our foremost physicists and science writers, takes us on a breathtaking journey to a multiverse comprising an endless series of big bangs, a multiverse with duplicates of every one of us, a multiverse populated by vast sheets of spacetime, a multiverse in which all we consider real are holographic illusions, and even a multiverse made purely of math--and reveals the reality hidden within each.

Using his trademark wit and precision, Greene presents a thrilling survey of cutting-edge physics and confronts the inevitable question: How can fundamental science progress if great swaths of reality lie beyond our reach? The Hidden Reality is a remarkable adventure through a world more vast and strange than anything we could have imagined.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, January 2011: Take any of physics' major theories of the fundamental nature of the universe, extrapolate its math to the logical extreme, and you get some version of a (so far unobservable) parallel universe. And who better to navigate these hypothetical versions of the "multiverse" than Brian Greene? Normally an unflinching apologist for string theory, the bestselling author of The Elegant Universe and The Fabric of the Cosmos here treats all viable alternate realities to a laudably fair shake. For a book exploring the most far-reaching implications of bleeding-edge mathematics, The Hidden Reality is surprisingly light on math, written as it is "for a broad audience … its only prerequisite the will to persevere." Such perseverance pays off with a motley cast of potential universes featuring doppelgngers, strings, branes, quantum probabilities, holographs, and simulated worlds. The result is that rare accomplishment in science writing for a popular audience: a volume that explains the science and its consequences while stimulating the imagination of even the uninitiated.

Oliver Sacks on The Hidden Reality

Oliver Sacks was born in London and educated in London, Oxford, California, and New York. He is professor of neurology and psychiatry at Columbia University, and Columbia's first University Artist. He is the author of many books, including Awakenings, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, and Musicophilia. His newest book, The Mind's Eye, was published in October, 2010.

Brian Greene is not only a profound cosmological thinker--a pioneer of string theory--but a writer of exceptional clarity and charm. His books--The Elegant Universe and The Fabric of the Cosmos among them--take one ever deeper into a universe stranger and more wonderful than anyone could have conceived a generation ago. The Hidden Reality takes us deeper still, and it has a special personal quality and warmth that is evident from the opening of the book, when Greene recollects how, as a boy, he was fascinated by the multiple reflections in parallel mirrors. He has never lost this childlike wonder at the world of physics, but he brings it now to examining theories of multiple universes, of the continual birth of universes, starting long before our own. . . and destined to continue, perhaps, to the end of time.

In the 1930s, as a boy myself, I read The Mysterious Universe by James Jeans. Jeans was, like Greene, a brilliant theoretical astronomer and equally mesmerizing writer. I thought Jeans's book was the most exciting, revelatory book I had ever read, and now, seventy years later, I feel the same excitement reading Brian Greene's new book, where every chapter opens level after level of previously unimaginable, mind-expanding realities.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. "There was a time when universe' meant all there is,'" writes Greene, but soon we may have to redefine that word, along with our own meager understanding of the cosmos. A theoretical physicist and celebrated author, Greene offers intrepid readers another in-depth yet marvelously accessible look inside the perplexing world of modern theoretical physics and cosmology. Greene's book The Elegant Universe explained late 20th-century efforts to find a unified theory of everything, culminating with string theory. But string theory opened up a new can of worms, hinting at the possible existence of multiple universes and other strange entities. The possibility of other universes existing alongside our own like holes in "a gigantic block of Swiss cheese" seems more likely every day. Beginning with relativity theory, the Big Bang, and our expanding universe, Greene introduces first the mind-blowing multiplicity of forms those parallel universes might take, from patchwork quilts or stretchy "branes" to landscapes and holograms riddled with black holes. With his inspired analogies starring everyone from South Park's Eric Cartman to Ms. Pac-Man and a can of Pringles, Greene presents a lucid, intriguing, and triumphantly understandable state-of-the-art look at the universe. From Booklist
That our cosmos is but one of many has inspired a recent spate of theoretical physicist-authorsLisa Randall, Michio Kaku, Leonard Susskindto advance their particular idea of the multiverse in general-interest works. Here their peer, Greene, comprehensively covers major variations of the multiverse concept. Numbering nine, they emerge from mathematical substrates that have yet to connect multiverse speculation with physical reality. Theory as arbiter of experimental and observational proof looms over each multiverse Greene discusses, some of which might become detectable with contemporary or some fantastic future technology, and some of which in principle could never be perceived. Greene explains that more accessible versions of the multiverse arise from investigations into general relativity and quantum mechanics. Puzzling over gravity, the wave function of electrons, and values of physical constants, physicists have devised daughter universes budding off our own or hovering nearby in higher dimensions postulated by string theory. Greenes exceptional clarity shows what evidence would hint at such parallel universes emerging from well-established theory and presents mind-benders suggesting that all universes are holograms projected from the surfaces of black holes. As bizarre as multiverses appear, the credence that scientists accord them is wonderfully transmitted to a lay readership by Greene. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Greenes as big a name as science produces: he hosted a PBS Nova television series based on his The Elegant Universe (1999); his encore, The Fabric of Reality (2004), loitered for 10 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list. All-out marketing from book tour to tweets portend demand equal to the publishers celebrity-scale first printing of 300,000 copies. --Gilbert Taylor

Another masterpiece of science writing from Brian Greene
By Michael Birman
Brian Greene's previous books are exemplars of what science writing should be: clear, wide-ranging in discussion and respectful of the intelligence of his audience. The Elegant Universe and The Fabric of the Cosmos are two of my three favorite popular science books. The third, Kip Thorne's Black Holes and Time Warps, is another superb example of science writing at its best. Now Brian Greene has added another masterpiece to the list. Everything that distinguishes Greene's writing style is in evidence in The Hidden Reality. His elegant prose is enjoyable to read. His brilliant ability to explain difficult abstract ideas in everyday language using easily understood examples still amazes me. And his use of vivid word pictures that always seem perfectly matched to the topic he's discussing propels his narrative forward so that the reader is never bored.

Yes The Hidden Reality is more accessible than his previous books. This book seems easier to read and is readily understandable. In his earlier books, I often read a paragraph several times in order to fully comprehend what Greene was attempting to communicate. That is something science and math majors are used to doing when reading textbooks but difficult for those not as scientifically adept. Greene's first two books dealt with Quantum Mechanics, String Theory and Einstein's Special and General Theories of Relativity: vast math-intensive topics that he was able to distill masterfully. The Hidden Reality inhabits a more abstract world, a conceptually challenging world. I quickly found Greene's more casual approach extremely helpful, even comforting, when I felt slightly adrift. The topics he discusses begin with the geometry of the universe: whether it is spherical (or positively curved), flat (with zero curvature) like a tabletop, or negatively curved like a Pringle.

The book devotes considerable time to the critical question of whether the universe is finite or infinite in size, something which has profound scientific and philosophical implications. It is a statistical certainty that in an infinite universe, regions of local space like ours will be endlessly repeated. In other words, assuming an infinite spatial universe with an expanding big-bang beginning, there are only a finite number of possible matter and energy configurations because the amount of energy and matter is finite. But there is an infinite amount of space within which those configurations will play out. Greene uses the example of a friend named Imelda whose passion for clothing has her purchasing 1000 pairs of shoes and 500 dresses. If Imelda is blessed with an infinitely long lifespan then, despite her vast wardrobe, if she changes outfits daily, within 1400 years she will have exhausted all possible new combinations. Imelda will be forced to repeat her sartorial choices. Philosophically, of course, all of that repetition of stars, planets and life's building blocks suggests that there are an infinite number of doppelgangers of each and every one of us. These infinite duplicates of ourselves would inhabit similar worlds that are forever hidden from mutual observation because the speed of light is finite. As Einstein showed in his Special Theory of Relativity, light-speed (300,000 km/sec) is the fastest rate by which information can be communicated. The bottom line: in an infinite universe the overwhelming bulk of reality remains hidden from its inhabitants by vast distances or by parallel dimensions harboring realities of every possible configuration.

In a finite spherical universe, on the other hand, the light from distant objects should ultimately traverse it several times, leading to multiple images of galaxies, for example. This hasn't been observed as yet, suggesting that the universe is either finite but huge or actually infinite in size. Though the size and shape of the universe remain undetermined, scientists when cornered tend to believe its size is infinite. Recent data also suggests that the universe is flat like a tabletop in shape.

Greene discusses all of the current hot topics in cosmology: brane-worlds, the multiverse, the holographic universe, unseen parallel worlds in dimensions separated by millimeters, our universe as a super-advanced computer program, the essentially hidden nature of reality. These are topics that have been discussed in other books but seldom with the passion for communication and clarity of thought that Greene exhibits in this one. The topics here are abstract concepts that exist at the very boundaries of human thought but Greene somehow manages to bring them down to earth. Even if you don't understand everything, the scientific vistas that Greene offers in this superb book are breathtaking in their intellectual beauty. You will find your personal horizons exponentially expanded. The Hidden Reality is replete with excellent illustrations that illuminate the material and are fun to look at. If this kind of science intrigues you then you will love this book. Brian Greene has written another masterpiece in a difficult genre.

Difficult- but rewarding.
By Michael J. Edelman
Beginning in the 16th Century, physics started to change from a purely scholastic mode of inquiry, in which questions were answered by argument from first principles and ancient authority, into a scientific one, in which observation and mathematical law predominated. With the introduction of Newton's work and his (and Leibniz') invention of the calculus, physics became a modern science, in which mathematics played a key role not only in testing theories, but in predicting phenomena as well. Even so, it was still possible for the non-scientist to understand much of the work of physicists, as it still dealt (for the most part) with laws and phenomena that could be observed, experienced, or at least imagined with the average person.

With the advent of relativity and quantum mechanics in the early 20th century, this all changed. Special Relativity dealt with velocities far beyond that which any human could ever experience. General Relativity dealt with interactions on a cosmic scale. And quantum mechanics dealt with scales far smaller than that which could be experienced or observed- even by physicists. What these new disciplines shared was that they they could only be truly understood by someone conversant with the mathematics involved. Although mass-induced curvature of space (for example) is commonly explained by analogy to a weight on a rubber sheet; that's at best, a weak metaphor. A ball bearing rolling on a rubber sheet is still being pulled down by gravity; it is not tracing a path in curved space that minimizes action.

As modern theories physics have become more complex, more purely mathematical, and further removed from the experience of the perceivable world, the books that attempt to explain things like inflationary cosmologies, string theory and supersymmetry have become increasingly less satisfying. And that brings us to the central failure of almost every popular book on modern physics I've ever read- the inability to actually explain the why and how. After reading countless books by popular authors like Tim Ferris, I realized that although many were, indeed, excellent writers, none of them actually understood the physics they were purporting to explain. At beast, they were simply repeating the metaphors they'd been given. They didn't understand the physics well enough to explain it.

There were a few exceptions- popular books written by actual physicists who also had a particular gift for teaching and explanation. To date, I've only found three who both have a deep understanding of modern physics, and who can convey more than a metaphorical understanding of this to a reasonably intelligent, but non-specialist, reader: Richard Feynman, Alan Guth, and Brian Greene. True, there are other physicists who write popular books, but most aim pretty low. They're satisfied to give a general sort of metaphorical explanation- curved space is like a curved rubber sheet, expansion is like inflating a beach ball, and strings are like... little strings. But Feynman, Guth and Greene each tried to really convey the real science.

The late Richard Feynman is still the master. His lectures- especially "The Character of Physical Law"- did a magnificent job of making clear even such difficult concepts as the quantum explanation of diffraction. Guth's "The Inflationary Universe" does a superb job of explaining topics like tension and negative energy in telling his story of the origins of cosmic inflation theory. And Brian Greene, author of the current volume under discussion, has now produced his third book attempting to explain some very difficult ideas to the lay reader. In "The Hidden Reality", Green tackles string theory, the multiverse, symmetry, group theory, and dozens of other topics, and he does so without resort to any "it's just like..." metaphors. He uses graphic representations when possible, to illustrate mathematical relationships without math when possible (although much of the real math can be found in the appendix.) He explains where and how contemporary cosmological theories originated, and gives the reader a good sense of exactly how we arrived at a position in which physics is largely dominated by untestable theories that make few predictions about the measurable universe- and why this is not necessarily a problem.

Greene is one of the principle authors of modern string theory, and he does a superlative job of conveying, for the lay reader, both the state of string theory, and its genesis. While to fully understand such notions as (say) the role of Calabi-Yu shapes in defining the topology of the multidimensional universe would no doubt require a real familiarity of topology, I think Greene comes as close as possible (or at least as close as I've seen) in conveying to the reader why it is that these shapes play a role in defining space, and how it is that physicists came to propose their existence. His explanation of quantum uncertainly and of Schrodinger's probability wave is probably the best non-mathematical one I've read.

This is not an easy book to read. I went as far as a few calculus courses and a semester of physics back in my undergraduate days, and I found this book fairly hard going. It's not terribly mathematical (except in the appendices) but the concepts are not easy, and there's little if any fluff to be found. This is not the sort of breezy reading found in the typical popular physics book (here's the atom, here's a quark, wasn't that cool?) The reader who attempts to simply skim through without trying to follow Greene's narration and really understand what he's trying to explain will quickly find themselves lost, reading words without a clue of what they mean. I've been reading it for two weeks, attacking a chapter (or part of a chapter) each day, and often backtracking to make sure I understand what Greene is trying to convey. The reader who is prepared to take this approach, and spend a lot of time reading, pausing, think about what they've read, and rereading each section to make sure they really understand what's going on, will find this a very rewarding book.

Often lost in the weeds
By J. A Magill
Let me say from the get go, I am a huge Brian Greene fan, having read both his previous books and having found them deeply edifying. Few writers working today possess his ability to take complex material and explain it in ways that the interested layman can digest. When I learned of his new book, I was excited to dive-in.

Unfortunately, for reasons that are not entirely clear to me, "The Hidden Reality" is far more opaque than his previous books. Time and again I found myself rereading a particular section, unable to decipher what he was seeking to explain. This may result from my own short-comings, I suspect that they might just as well arise from those limitations that Greene, from the very beginning, admits bedevils the notion of the "multiverse." Even more so than in String Theory, this topic currently stands at a point of being little more than speculation. Yes, the math creates the possibility that these other realms exist, but no one has to date suggested a method of falsification for this theory, nor does it offer much in the way of testable predictions.

Sometimes when he tries to counter critics, Green proves to be his own worst enemy. Consider a chapter where he argues against those who point out the difficulty of testing the hypothesis of a "muliverse." In reply, Greene points to Einstein's theories and the inability to demonstrate their veracity through experimentation in the early 20th century when they first appeared. However, this ignores the fact that Einstein's theories offered obvious precise predictions that, even if not testable at the time, one could imagine appearing in the near future. Had these predictions not withstood tests, out would have gone the theory. To date, nobody can offer similar predictions through this theory that we are likely to be able to test anytime soon.

The result of these weaknesses is that I found myself often lost in the weeds, left with little more than the point that the math says that these things may be so. I can understand Greene's enthusiasm at the possibility of limitless realities beyond our own, but glorying at the possibility doesn't get me any closer to accepting -- or even understanding -- that these intriguing suggestions might prove real.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Exclusive: A Letter from Chris Gatcum, author of Light and Shoot 50 Fashion Photos Chris Gatcum Dear Amazon Readers, Fashion is one of photography's fastest moving genres, reflecting an industry that by its very nature needs to reinvent itself on a continual basis. As a result, fashion photography is also one of the most exciting and "open" genres, offering a much greater opportunity for creative expression and experimentation than many of the other subjects we are likely to turn our lenses on. However, ideas and inspiration don’t necessarily "just happen." It is often the case that looking at other people's work will spark something, whether it's a certain way in which someone has been lit, the overall styling or "mise en scene," or something else altogether. With this in mind, my aim with this book was simple: to collect and present a selection of stunning fashion images that would be guaranteed to inspire, regardless of whether they came from world-renowned professionals such as Miles Aldridge, Raul Higuera, Perou, or Rankin, or were produced by relatively "unknown" image-makers. This search has taken me around the globe (at least in terms of internet travel), calling in on both established names and relative newcomers. But this is far more than a diverse showcase of exceptional photographs. The photographers involved have also taken the time to explain how they went about creating their image(s). This willingness to share what are in some instances "trade secrets" is what I feel sets this book apart from its peers, and it is something for which I am deeply grateful. So thank you to everyone featured for agreeing to play a part in this project. It wouldn't have happened without you. Thanks also to you, the reader. I hope this book helps you in some way, no matter how small. --Chris Gatcum

"This book is an asset to any bookshelf but really should be a table book. There are 50 artsy pictures taken by impeccable photographers. The make-up on these models is fabulous, and the clothing creates scenes from different eras, but lighting is the key enabling us to see the beauty. Light creates mood, and fashion photographers are highly skilled at utilizing it - as these pictures expose. This book is an inspirational and practical guide to shooting fashion in a wide range of styles and settings with the emphasis on the use of lighting, rather than digital processing, to create a specific look or feel. Some of the images tap into your creativity, while others may not be for you, but one thing for sure: all of these pictures are exciting and dramatic. It is easy to focus on the eyecatching models, but it's hard to imagine these photos without the exceptionally skilled photographers who control the fashion shoot."--City Book Review.com

Very Good Book
By Michael Fowler
This is an important book for any photographer.

A. It assumes you are familiar with and own studio lights.
B. It also assumes you are a pro photographer.

It is very well written in terms of lighting, angles, modifiers, camera settings, etc. nothing is left out. You are able to see the finished image as well as the set-ups. The book is short on theory as it is very practical book.

Bottom line: If you want to shoot fashion or learn how to achieve "The Look" this book is a necessary start, and worth every penny.

thinking man's lighting book
By Dave
As a professional photographer for over 30 years I find this book very interesting. The book reveals more about how the photographer was thinking about each photo and why more so than how they did it. I like that approach, other readers looking for more details may not. Gatcum tells me just enough about what was used to create the lighting allowing me to verify my own read on what was done and also answer the old how did they do that? Some of the shots are done simply and some have all sorts of lighting going on. The interesting part is getting a read on the why of each image as much as the how. I find myself just enjoying the book and it's images rather than feeling I am reading a textbook.

The Devil's Arguments, In His Own Language
By R. W. Rasband
In the forward to this remarkable book Milosz writes that he wants to give the totalitarian point of view "in his own words, from his own point of view." The result is this ambitious, fascinating tour of the human mind twisted by the lies of the culture that surroundes it. It's a schizophrenic place that resembles the scarier novels of the noir writer Jim Thompson. There's nothing solid to cling to; everything dissolves into fear and loathing. Milosz turns his poetical gifts to the case studies of several Polish intellectuals who became entangled with the Communist party. Milosz doesn't name them but one is clearly Tadeusz Borowski, the author of the Holocaust short story collection "This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen." The title of that book in Polish was "The Stony World", which reflected how Borowski, an Auschwitz survivor, came to see the world--as dominated by force, without effective moral constraint. Milosz depicts Borowski as a man who sought shelter under the protection of the strongest earthly power available--the Communists--but was unable finally to justify the price of that loyalty (he committed suicide.) What keeps someone from succumbing to "Ketman" (the two-facedness that Orwell called "double-think?) Milosz implies the answer is religious faith, which allows one to trust in an objective truth beyond the lies and terror of the stony world (he was a devout Catholic.) This book is a must read for anyone who wants to keep the world from stealing his soul.

Great analysis and double entendre
By jimsecor
How to say amazing so everyone understands it? A fiction? A non-fiction? Considering the topic and world he's working with, the non-fiction is fiction. The billowing of US culture and politics and society at the present runs a frightening parallel for the future.

Review

‘Editors Brink and Price are to be commended for coordinating this impressive volume. The book is large and learned, intended as a reference work for scholars and serious students of Scandinavia in the Viking Age. Lay readers with a keen interest in the Vikings will also wish to have this reference work, not only for the wealth of information, but also because the articles are well written by noted scholars. The articles are often wide-ranging, and the breadth given to the various topics covered is impressive … Indispensable for scholars of the Middle Ages who wish to expand their course offerings by teaching courses on the Viking age, or for scholars and students who wish to do research in this field.’ – CHOICE

'The publishers, editors and individual authors are to be commended for producing a volume that is generally thorough, readable and valuable, and that will undoubtedly have a long life both as a standard work of reference and as a beacon guiding further research into the Viking phenomenon.' – Saga-Book

Review
This approach is much needed in general, and particularly in music, where influences of diverse cultures are of such importance. Thank you for creating this book.

Excellent sense detail and interest in the writing. There are just enough details and facts on each artist to give an overall sense of who they were/are but not so much info that it blunts the impact of the major points or obscures larger concepts.

This text is very up-to-date; the discussion is carried to the present and music that students are likely to know or have heard about.

One of the better music books out there
By Grounds Keeper Willie
So far this book as been a much better read than any of my other text books. It's not boring so reading the chapters is much more enjoyable. One thing that is neat is the fact that each concept or topic has a song to help to hear and understand what was said. Best part chapters as far sized so reading only take 30 minutes

Dubbed the "Hippie Mafia," the Brotherhood began in the mid-1960s as a small band of peace-loving, adventure-seeking surfers in Southern California. After discovering LSD, they took to Timothy Leary's mantra of "Turn on, tune in, and drop out" and resolved to make that vision a reality by becoming the biggest group of acid dealers and hashish smugglers in the nation, and literally providing the fuel for the psychedelic revolution in the process.

Just days after California became the first state in the union to ban LSD, the Brotherhood formed a legally registered church in its headquarters at Mystic Arts World on Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach, where they sold blankets and other countercultural paraphernalia retrieved through surfing safaris and road trips to exotic locales in Asia and South America. Before long, they also began to sell Afghan hashish, Hawaiian pot (the storied "Maui Wowie"), and eventually Colombian cocaine, much of which the Brotherhood smuggled to California in secret compartments inside surfboards and Volkswagen minibuses driven across the border.

They also befriended Leary himself, enlisting him in the goal of buying a tropical island where they could install the former Harvard philosophy professor and acid prophet as the high priest of an experimental utopia. The Brotherhood's most legendary contribution to the drug scene was homemade: Orange Sunshine, the group's nickname for their trademark orange-colored acid tablet that happened to produce an especially powerful trip. Brotherhood foot soldiers passed out handfuls of the tablets to communes, at Grateful Dead concerts, and at love-ins up and down the coast of California and beyond. The Hell's Angels, Charles Mason and his followers, and the unruly crowd at the infamous Altamont music festival all tripped out on this acid. Jimi Hendrix even appeared in a film starring Brotherhood members and performed a private show for the fugitive band of outlaws on the slope of a Hawaiian volcano.

Journalist Nicholas Schou takes us deep inside the Brotherhood, combining exclusive interviews with both the group's surviving members as well as the cops who chased them. A wide-sweeping narrative of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll (and more drugs) that runs from Laguna Beach to Maui to Afghanistan, Orange Sunshine explores how America moved from the era of peace and free love into a darker time of hard drugs and paranoia.

From Publishers Weekly
Drug dealers with delusions of grandeur populate this colorful but overwrought history of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, a 1960s-era narcotics ring–cum–hippie church. Influenced by psychedelic prophet Timothy Leary—who called the group's leader, former high school bully John Griggs, the holiest man in America—the California-based Brotherhood styled its cheap, extra-strength Orange Sunshine brand of LSD as a pathway to God. Journalist Schou (Kill the Messenger) takes the spiritual purpose of these psychedelic warriors, along with their solemn acid-dropping sacraments and utopian pipe dreams, rather too seriously. (He likewise inflates their sporadic ventures scoring Mexican marijuana and Afghan hashish into a global smuggling empire.) His narrative quickly devolves into a haphazard picaresque of drug deals, drug busts, overdoses, surfing, rock concerts (Jimi Hendrix does a cameo), orgies, and people living in teepees. Schou sometimes forgets that reading about other people's acid trips—The whole sky took on huge forms of dancing Buddhas and the energy got really bright—is a drag. Still, the mixture of lively freakery and stoned pomposity gives his portrait of countercultural excess an authentic period feel. (Mar.)

From Booklist
The Brotherhood of Eternal Love was a group of 1960s hippie visionaries with a plan. Imagine an America in which LSD is a common source of inspiration and insight for the whole populace, and the pronouncements of Timothy Leary, Ram Dass, and other academic space cowboys are prized philosophical touchstones. Such, more or less, was the group’s goal as producer-distributors of the famous Orange Sunshine LSD that was a part of campus all over America in the late ’60s. At its organizational peak, the Brotherhood funded the Weather Underground and the Black Panthers to successfully break Leary out of prison. Schou interviewed remaining Brotherhood members (who, unlike acid-gobbling pop musicians, seem to have largely retained their memories), gleaning impressive amounts of detail for his discussions of the ins and outs of the era’s drug trade and the moving of vast quantities of marijuana and hashish along with the LSD. Loaded with little-known historical mots, this is an excellent chronicle of a piece of history unlikely to be repeated. --Mike Tribby

Review

“Nicholas Schou manages -- amazingly -- to penetrate four decades of silence….The result is a mind-blowing scrap of found history, like something buried deep in the earth -- and you cannot avert your eyes….With Orange Sunshine, Schou has crafted a definitive history of the dark side of the 1960s.” ―Los Angeles Times

“'Orange Sunshine,' is as close to an 'authorized' story as there's likely to be. Much of it reads more like fiction than history....the Brotherhood's story reads like some mystical adventure tale from a long-gone era. But for a peek at those heady times, 'Orange Sunshine' is one worthy flashback.” ―San Francisco Chronicle

“Journalist Nicholas Schou did yeoman's work digging into the story of the band of hippies that became a huge LSD cartel in the 1970s. He interviewed many former members, some of them not that happy to be found, earning their trust over some four years.” ―San Diego Union-Tribune

“Schou interviewed remaining Brotherhood members (who, unlike acid-gobbling pop musicians, seem to have largely retained their memories), gleaning impressive amounts of detail for his discussions of the ins and outs of the era's drug trade and the moving of vast quantities of marijuana and hashish along with the LSD. Loaded with little-known historical mots, this is an excellent chronicle of a piece of history unlikely to be repeated.” ―Booklist

“A fascinating read for any audience and essential history for anyone interested in the roots of psychedelia.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“His book is a roller-coaster ride through many of the Brotherhood's biggest smuggling adventures, and also provides hilarious details into daily life in Dodge City. Most important, Schou finally dispels the myth Tim Leary was the leader of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love.” ―High Times (Four "cannabis" review)

“Colorful … the mixture of lively freakery and stoned pomposity gives [Schou's] portrait of countercultural excess an authentic period feel.” ―Publishers Weekly

“OC Weekly reporter Nicholas Schou spent four years uncovering the brotherhood's surreal, largely unknown story, pulling together written accounts of its history and run-ins with the law and persuading brotherhood members to be interviewed decades after its demise....Read Schou's well-researched and compelling book to decide for yourself about the brotherhood's true legacy.” ―Orange Coast magazine

“His reporting is diligent, and his story comes mostly from the mouths of participants speaking for the first time on the record after decades of hiding deep underground. That story deserves to be told.” ―Reason

“Orange Sunshine reads so much like classic Thomas Pynchon--with its mind-bending and hilarious tale of a secret society of mystic surfers who bomb Southern California with LSD--that the reader has to wonder: Is 'Nick Schou' a pseudonym?” ―Mike Davis, author of City of Quartz, Planet of Slums, and In Praise of Barbarians

“Nick Schou has uncovered a bizarre, wild ride of a story that seems straight out of Easy Rider or Zabriskie Point--except it really happened. Orange Sunshine serves as a valuable time capsule from the American counterculture. It's also one hell of a fun read.” ―Rob Kirkpatrick, author of 1969: The Year Everything Changed

I was there
By John B. Goode
I'm surprised at the negative reviews of this book as far as content is concerned. Nick interviewed all persons willing to give input into his book.
Many of the "brothers" are silent today. They are laying low, out of sight and hopefully out of the attention of the agencies who pursued us for so many years.
For many years, late into the seventies, I was stopped and searched by Customs agents whenever I was returning from an international trip. It had the effect of making one desire to be invisible. I don't personally know or remember, "Thumper." He apparently became a protege of John Gale after I left. But much of what he details sounds accurate. The theme I most appreciate about this particular story about the Brotherhood is that (at least in the sixties) we did not exist to make money (although money is nice) but were greatly fueled by a desire to change a world which seemed to be heading for violent chaos or at the very least, a mindless- cookie cutter society. We had become transformed by the taking of LSD and mellowed by the smoking of pot and hashish. This book describes the feeling of those times.

A helluva good story
By Anthony Pignataro
First I have to note that Nick Schou and I go back a few years. He gave my first reporting job back at OC Weekly in 1996. He's an outstanding writer, reporter and friend. And he knows a good story when he finds one.

Here he's managed to describe in surprisingly colorful detail an underground of hippie drug smugglers that spent the late 1960s hopping between Laguna Beach, Maui and Afghanistan. Tim Leary's here, of course, but so are a band of characters far more interesting and idealistic, in my opinion. That nearly all spoke to Schou on the record is testament to his skills as a reporter.

One one level this is a crime story: the evolution of a hippie drug smuggling operation and the cops who eventually took it down. But it's also a larger than life story about people who used highly illegal and unconventional ways to, in their point of view, bring peace on earth.

Put simply, it's a fascinating read.

An important story
By kevnm
This is a great book for anyone interested in the 60s, the counterculture, lsd, and the period of time when many thought a cosmic change of human consciousness was possible. Having just finished "The Harvard Psychedelic Club," I was happy to find a completely different look at the same period in "Orange Sunshine."

Although Leary figures in both books, "Orange Sunshine" is not about Harvard Professors, Beatnik Poets or famous writers. The Brotherhood was made up of lower middle-class suburban boys whose interest in cars and football were replaced by visions of god after taking LSD. John Griggs, the charismatic leader, had visions of establishing a hippie utopia on a tropical island and began selling some drugs to finance his vision. Griggs, an apparently sincere religious seeker, saw his vision give way to ego and money as the brotherhood morphed into an international drug smuggling ring.

This rise and fall takes place in suburban Orange County, Mexico, Afghanistan and Maui, and makes for an intiguing social history. The cast of characters, their adventures, their acid trips and their legal skirmishes provide great stories and add to the rich story of that decade. Highly recommended.

Digging Up Mother: A Love Story, by Doug Stanhope, Johnny Depp - foreword

Doug Stanhope is one of the most critically acclaimed and stridently unrepentant comedians of his generation. What will surprise some is that he owes so much of his dark and sometimes uncomfortably honest sense of humor to his mother, Bonnie. It was the cartoons in HER Hustler magazine issues that molded the beginnings of his comedic journey, long before he was old enough to know what to do with the actual pornography. It was Bonnie who recited Monty Python sketches with him, who introduced him to Richard Pryor at nine years old, and who rescued him from a psychologist when he brought that brand of humor to school. And it was Bonnie who took him along to all of her AA meetings, where Doug undoubtedly found inspiration for his own storytelling.

Bonnie's own journey from bartending to truck driving, massage therapy, elder abuse, and stand-up comedy and acting never stopped her from being Doug's genuine number one fan. So when Bonnie's alcoholic, hoarding life finally came to an end so many weird adventures later in rural Arizona, it was inevitable that Doug and Bonnie would be together for one last journey.

Digging Up Mother follows Doug's absurd, chaotic, and often obscene life as it intersects with that of his best friend, his biggest fan, and the love of his life: his mother, Bonnie. And it all starts with her death - one of the most memorable and amazing farewells you will ever hear.

BONUS: As fans of his stand-up and listeners of his podcast will attest, Doug is not a "by-the-book" type of guy. This audiobook is no exception. In what he refers to as the "director's cut commentary," Doug forgoes the confines of a straight-read and creates a truly unique listening experience, going off-script to riff throughout its sections and bringing in a cast of colorful characters - childhood friends, his podcast co-host, and fellow comedians and musicians - to voice letters from teachers and guidance counselors, diary entries from his mother, and even old homework assignments. Additionally, Doug has several of the folks mentioned in the book expound on and give their version of events and stories, often remembered quite differently. The result is a wildly fun audiobook that's as distinct as the comedian's own brand of humor.

A special note from the author:

Good news for all my blind and/or illiterate fans! The audio version of my book Digging Up Mother is now available on Audible!

It's read podcast-style by myself and the golden-throated Chad Shank and features guest performances from those who appeared in the book, dropping in to share their own blurred memories of our sloppy pasts and ugliest stories. Guests include my childhood delinquent partner in crime Chris O'Conner, and Greg Chaille, Bingo, Mat Becker, Sarah Hyland (now Sarah HylanDER) and more.

If you are wondering what "podcast-style" means, it means we were drinking a lot. For days. And f*ing up a lot. They've assured me that they left the best f*ck-ups in the finished product. Most of them no doubt are my own. I read like Bill Burr learning a foreign language.

Thanks in advance for listening and sharing, Facebooking, Tweeting, Instaf*cking, Redditing, Water-Cooler Chattering and all other means of spreading the word. I'm only gonna listen to the Chad Shank chapters. Goddamn does he sound delightful.

Spoiler Alert: We all die at the end.
By W. Williams
"I always feel sorry for people who don’t drink, because when they wake up in the morning, that’s as good as they’re gonna feel all day”

Lawrence Roman (1921-2008) as delivered by Jack Lemmon in Under the Yum Yum Tree (1963)

The line, incorrectly credited to Frank Sinatra, might well have been said by a much older less hip Doug Stanhope about persons of my ilk; we might be utterly boring recluses but we love good comedy. That is obvious, we bought the book didn’t we? He lives this life so the rest of us don’t have to, and it’s truly comforting that Doug is out there fighting the good fight. A mere mortal man would surely perish in the wake of such depravity and substance abuse, but it’s clear Doug is no ordinary human being. He is the liver of life, the teller of truth, and the slayer of pretense. In America we might have the freedom to engage in this kind of outrageous debauchery and moral degradation, except in further contemplation we don’t. There is little question that many of the activities described in this book would land any one of us for a long stretch in federal prison, so don’t try this at home. You have to marvel at Doug’s stamina and ability to slip the grasp of Johnny Law. It proves without question that love conquers all, especially when it’s a mother’s love.

So who knew that this ex-telemarketing scam artist drunken reprobate mama’s boy could write. Damn you Doug Stanhope for getting me all misty eyed on the last page. Damn you for making me spend another $15.46 to send a copy to my sister because of our mother.

Doug, you lucked out writing a good book this time, you even got Johnny D to write the foreword. We all know about the lawsuit, it was payback wasn’t it? But let’s see if you can do it again with a follow up book, I mean you half way promised to tell us the story of Adderal Jack and Rebecca Jean. But the sophomore effort is always tougher, do you have the stones to try it? We’ll be waiting.
Five Stars.

Thank you Doug, for bettering my life immeasurably.
By JeremeMW
I had pre-ordered this and I was thrilled when it arrived this morning. I can not put into words how beautifully Doug's masterful storytelling has filled the inch and a half thick void under the bent third leg of my dining room table. Now my beer doesn't spill when I sit alone, drunkenly weeping. Thanks to Doug and his dead mom I was finally able to bury the dead frog that I've been using to level off the table for all these months. I can't recommend this enough.

The only reason this won't win awards is because it's too vulgar and honest. Bonnie Stanhope-style
By Dan Anderson
Vulnerable, honest, vulgar, hilarious, sad. This has everything a memoir/comedy book needs.

I've been boarding his work for years and when he announced that he was writing a book about his mother, I pre-ordered it immediately. As soon as Amazon carried it. I wanted to learn more about his life. Her life. People that lived the way they believed. Not inhibited by passed- down social inheritance.

The book starts with the death of his mother, which you already know all about if you listen to his stand up. He doesn't get sappy or sentimental but keeps things moving.

He spends a lot of time explaining how he worked as a con man in phone sales. Personally I would have like to hear more about his stand-up life and less about his life on the phone. However the stories related to his phone career are still entertaining and hilarious.

Once dog starts writing about his stand up live the story becomes more interesting. It was a rare insight into one of my role models and the life he lived.

The story itself is honest and painful and true. When I finish the book I compared it to other memoirs ever read. And this one sticks out among all of them. Including Angela's Ashes. And other prize-winning memoirs. While this won't likely be winning any awards, it is certainly worth reading and sharing with your friends.

I cannot wait for the next book. I'd read anything by this guy.
