Great Latin Textbook

I bought this because my daughter finished the 3 disc Rosetta Stone Latin series and wanted to continue. It's a solid basic Latin grammar and textbook. Not cutesy, well organized, not religious, rigorous but not too complicated. Highly recommended!

this solutions manual is for the nivaldo tro 'chemistry: a molecular approach' book. it is a must have study resource! it lays out every single problem & how to do each problem step by step. i wouldn't have made it through college chemistry without it!

Good explanation, but only has odd problem answers

This is a good resource, however it only shows you how to do the odd problems from the book. The title is "selected solutions", which was different then the title it shows on this page. I think I got the "selected solutions" instead of the entire solutions book, which I know exists.

What is this??

It has the same cover to match the Chemistry: A Molecular Approach second addition, but a lot of the problems are also in different places, for instance Chp3 # 56 in the text is Chp 3 # 58 in the solution manual and a lot of the problem number are jumbles. Maybe this is a different version or something, but it's is really annoying because now that I look at it, it doesn't actually say which version it is. It looks like it matches the 2nd edition

About the Author

Thomas G. Weiss is Presidential Professor of Political Science at The CUNY Graduate Center and Director of the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies, where he is co-director of the United Nations Intellectual History Project. He is the chair of the Academic Council on the UN System and the former editor of its journal, Global Governance. He has written or edited some 35 books and numerous articles about multilateral approaches to international peace and security, humanitarian action, and sustainable development.

Sam Daws is Executive Director of the United Nations Association of the UK. He has served as a senior policy advisor on UN issues for 17 years, including three years as First Officer in the Executive Office of Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He previously directed a Geneva-based international consultancy. He undertook doctoral studies on UN reform at New College, Oxford, and has been a visiting fellow at Cambridge and Yale Universities. He has co-authored or edited six books.

IM Residency Must Have

I've used this book for three years and it is by far the best handbook. It provides a quick prep for attending rounds and morning report. I also have used it in preparation for the in service exam given each year. While obviously not an all encompassing text (and not intended to be) it is surprisingly complete. A good deal of information covered on the ABIM exam is actually in this book. My only gripe is the text - too small. Every IM intern and resident should carry this book and learn it in and out. Worth the 37 bucks.

Great for review, but you will need to go deeper

Although I consider this to be one of the best handbooks for a quick superficial review, there are several other books which allow for more in depth learning while on the wards... such as The Consult Manual of Internal Medicine & of course... The Washington Manual. I would definitely carry around, or at least have handy, one of these while on the wards. If you get Pocket Med, make sure you get the new edition (2nd) as there is a new neurology section which is very nice.

A MUST-HAVE pocket reference for residents

Read an UpToDate article and then read about that topic in Pocket Medicine and you will see 99% of the information from Uptodate but in concise format, including references to key articles. This book is packed with information. However, it's more in bullet and table format than in paragraph form, so not easy to read from if you're learning about a topic for the first time. More of a reference to the key points in each disease process assuming that you know a little about it beforehand. For that, you need 5 minute clinical consults or something similar. Also, the index could use some more cross-indexing, it can be tough to find subjects sometimes if you are in a hurry. It's available for handhelds too...haven't tried it yet though.

You have to read this!

At first, it seems like a story that is all about the future: flying Molters, exploring other planets, and finding that some stars and planets are no more. But it is so much more than that.
Once you really get into "Embassy" by S. Alex Martin – which is incredibly easy to do – you find that it’s more than a story of the future. Arman Lance lives his life with one goal: reuniting with a girl from another planet. He had fallen in love with her during one summer, and only thought about finding her again. But as the years pass and he becomes a part of the Embassy, he realizes just how much he may have wasted those years. Arman had isolated himself from his friends and worse…but still only yearned for Ladia.
Arman’s story teaches us a lesson some of us might not want to hear. He quite literally had almost missed the moon while counting the stars, and in more ways than one, letting his happiness be dependent upon returning to Ladia. With the help of some his new friends – Glacia especially – Arman sees just how much he has been missing in the past few years. Some people live their lives going through the motions of an everyday routine, working for the destination and not enjoying the journey; we see this in Arman. "Embassy" teaches you to live life to the fullest and be the happiest you can be. After all, you don’t want to look back on life at the end and say, “Eh, it was okay.”
The book constantly leaves you ready for the next page, toys with your emotions, and leaves you in suspense, all the way up to the most important decision Arman makes in his life thus far, walking all the way to the cliff of self-destruction. A work unlike any other I have ever read, it has truly lead me to wonder, am I living my life in the best way that I can, or will I look back and say that it could have been better?

Not a Sci-Fi fan, but enjoyed this book!

I personally do not find sci-fi books interesting, but Embassy actually caught my attention. I would read it one day and pick it up a few days later and still be interested in it.

Embassy is a unique, life lesson novel that will have readers thinking about how they live their own lives each and every day.

Theme:
Self-Discovery, Life, and Forgiveness

Plot:

It’s the 44th century and Arman Lance is living on a planet called Undil. His father is an ambassador traveling to other planets. When another ambassador comes back with Arman’s father, Arman gets introduced to his daughter Ladia. Arman and Ladia fall in love during the summer and when she leaves to go back to her planet Belvun, Arman is devastated. He makes it his life mission to go to Belvun and reunite with Ladia, his one true love. But as he barks on the journey to Belvun, Arman faces obstacles he never thought he would have to overcome.

Characters:
Arman→ Okay first, I was sympathetic towards Arman, then annoyed, and now I think he is a pretty cool guy… and he doesn’t even know what a great person he can be! Arman was a jerk at the beginning of the book! There was negativity all around him and that made others stay away from him. Arman would put himself down and not live up to his full potential; just so he could stay in his comfort zone. But afterwards, he began to grow on me and I had respect for him.

The characters actually seem like real people. They had their own and unique personalities. It was fun and exciting to see how they were all different in their own ways.

Style/Setting:
The setting took place in outer space. Earth has been destroyed and now the human race is continuing on other planets.

Alex Martin has come up with his own planetary names such as, Belvun and Undil. Embassy is divided into three parts: The Recruits, The Void, and The Story.

I love the Hologis game Martin created for the characters to play. If you know what the movie The Purge and The Hunger Games is about, the Hologis game was like a combination of them both! This was one of my favorite scenes! The scenery was written perfectly and I felt like I was actually in the audience myself anxious to see who would be the last man or woman standing!

I love the characters and creativity this book has. Embassy stands out from the rest of the YA Contemporary and Sci-Fi novels. Usually my favorite character is the main character, but this time..its an old man! Ha! Can you believe it? His name is Captain Blitner.

Although, the beginning was slow and I wish there was more description of the characters’ appearances, Embassy teaches how life is precious and to not dwell or waste any opportunity that comes your way.

Lesson Learned? Live life to the fullest and don’t let your past hold you back.

not your typical deep-space romance

EMBASSY was not what I expected--and there are both positive and negative aspects to that. Knowing it was a deep-space drama/romance set years after human beings have left Earth to colonize other planets, I expected it to be like most such stories, with plenty of action, fantastic worlds, alien races, and schmaltzy kissing scenes. But it had none of the above; instead, it was a character-driven story about Arman Lance, a young man whose father has recently died and who joins the colonization program primarily to track down Ladia, a girl with whom he had a brief relationship several years before. What drives the plot is Arman's development from self-centered, self-pitying teen loner to more responsible, worldly, hopeful young man. I enjoyed watching him develop, and I appreciated that Martin decided to write a book that goes against expectations. I also found the world-building subtle and sophisticated, with the details of the colonization program emerging gradually as Arman goes through training and is then sent on his first deep-space mission.

All of this is good. What's not so good is the relative lack of tension, risk, and conflict in the story. It's not just that very little of a dramatic nature happens in EMBASSY; it's that I too seldom felt a strong sense of the characters being challenged or threatened in any significant way, whether physically or emotionally. In the first third of the book, the moment of highest tension--a well-rendered scene involving a high-tech game in which Arman and fellow recruits participate--provides some excitement, but it doesn't do much to move the plot forward, because, again, it doesn't seem to carry a significant element of tension or risk. Late in the novel, when Arman finally arrives at Ladia's home planet, there's another potential moment of high tension--but it doesn't quite pan out, and after it's gone, the book returns to the fairly flat, steady state it's maintained all along. I'm not asking for a book where the characters are constantly confronting and escaping life-threatening situations; Martin isn't writing that kind of book. But I did feel a need for more drama--even if, given the nature of the story, that was internal drama.

So I'm giving the book three stars for its intriguing concept, strong characterization, and gutsy decision to go against the grain--but I found myself wishing for a stronger story arc, one that propelled me forward with greater urgency.

Great for people who are not quite beginners not quite experts

While everyone's starting to learn cooler hipper languages, the reality is that VBA in excel is still pretty darn useful.

If you have absolutely no experience then VBA for dummies is still - to me - one of the better places to start. The book is not as big and intimidating. However, after you've already written a few programs, this book is fantastic. Great step by step instructions. Lots of examples. Advanced sections are great. It will take me some time before this all becomes old hat for me.

If you were looking for something that uses VBA to link to other Microsoft applications. You should be good with this book. It goes into detail on how to interface with outlook, deal with sending emails, interface with Word or PowerPoint.

If you need to learn how to interface with databases, this is not the best choice. But there is no reason to believe it would be in the title or table of contents, so you really can't complain.

Will it replace the all mighty google. No, but as a supplement, it is excellent and a bit more structured. The explanations are far better than what you'd find on-line. There are tons of random helpful tips and history that - if you're nerdy enough to read the whole book rather than just use the table of contents and index to get to the sections you need - are pretty darn wonderful.

Oh, and for people who can't stand the upgrades in the new version of Excel, the author explains that stuff too. One reason to get the newer vs the older version.

Do not buy Kindle version

I find the book very informative and useful and I feel cheated on

I sadly bought the Kindle version and I feel ripped off, First I pay 4 dollars more for the Kindle version even if that meant me not getting the CD or other side products. I could live with that, at least I got the book right....

But no, the examples in this book are useless as it is not possible to zoom the images with Kindle and most formuals that Spreadsheet goes over are based on those images.

I had before bought the book "Excel The missing Manual" and that was great on Kindle and it was even cheaper for Kindle,
but adding 4 dollars for Kindle version without any side products and horrible quality is a rip off, and Mr. Spreadseet and Amazon should really do something to fix this. Its amazing disrespect to customers. I cant see my self buy a book by Mr. Spreadsheet again or even Amazon just because of this incident, I'll stick to other authors that at least have the decency to not publish books for Kindle version if they cant provide the same quality as the book.

It is incredibly frustrating and i feel so ripped off, you can not see this flaw in the preview so I feel cheated on.

Sad as the book is so good.

Great book to learn Excel VBA

I tried the Bill Jelen "VBA and Macros" book first but got too frustrated with it. Too much was left "un-said" in that book. So, even though I was forcing myself to learn from it, I decided to get this book too.

WOW! John Walkenbach does a great job of starting at the beginning, giving a very interesting spreadsheet background, and then quickly and concisely plunging you into the VBA world. I have also picked up a lot of non-VBA great Excel tips that I have started using.

Keep in mind, this book still isn't for the timid. It is serious learning and you have to be prepared to learn quick. But, I feel the book does a great job of teaching with just the right amount of detail. It also helps if you think very logical and sequential. If you can't organize your thoughts, you won't be able to program very well.

A Classic - Back in Print at a Bargain Price

The best book on Orientalism currently available in this price range. This is a larger, hardbound edition of the same volume published in 2009 in softcover (also by Ullmann). I have the softcover edition and was impressed enough with that work to order this newer hardcover. This book contains about as good a selection of Orientalist art as one is likely to find. There are a few other noteworthy Orientalist, coffee-table books out there but be forewarned as to sticker shock ($100 - $500 range).

I have no reservations, in balance, recommending this book to others, but it's not without a few shortcomings. The final chapter (some fifty pages) consists of paintings from the modern era. I am sure it was the intent of the author to encompass the full breadth of Orientalist Art but the paintings from this later period don't remotely compare to the quality of that genre's Golden Age. I can't help but think of what was left on the cutting room floor to make room for those less worthy additions.

The quality of the reproductions is a little inconsistent in places. Some of the images are a bit washed out. My last quibble is more of a personal peeve but I really prefer to see these oversized art books issued with dust jackets. They enhance the appearance of the book and really do protect the boards from soiling. This edition has a four inch paper band that is more of a nuisance than anything else. The book was otherwise well bound and the pages were a perfect weight.

Again, in spite of my criticisms, I would have no reservations recommending this book. What they did right far outweighs any of my complaints. I own several of Ullmann's enormous, architectural productions and the images there are breathtakingly clear. I may be missing something here but it would seem as if some of that quality should be able to trickle down to its poorer relations. I guess I have just answered my own question.

BTW - Kudos to Amazon, the book arrived in perfect condition.
