When Mommy Is a Writer

'And what do you do?' the gentleman seated to my right at a dinner party politely asked me. I was about thirty-two years old and the mother of three little girls.
'I'm a mom,' I answered proudly.
'Oh, so you don't work?' He sniffed.

I will never forget the way this well-pedigreed captain of industry turned away from me in an instant to pursue a conversation with the woman on his other side—hopefully, somebody with a life.

And I never forgot the sympathetic looks, the rude withdrawals, the assumption that I was surely not important enough or enlightened enough to make decent �conversation.

The women who were just starting to emerge in careers of their own back in the changing 1970s were sometimes equally disdainful. It was the era when all things seemed possible for women; Betty Friedan's book The Feminine Mystique announced that the world was bigger than a baked potato. And suddenly, work was the answer to getting beyond the kitchen walls.

I was one of those women who didn't work 'outside the home,' as we were careful to enunciate, until my three daughters were safely launched in school at least for most of the day. I loved those years at home. But to be perfectly frank, I also found myself occasionally wondering whether I'd ever get my turn to do what I wanted.

It came. But in a carefully selected way.

I became a mommy-writer. In what turned out to be a perfect synthesis for me, I wrote about being a mom. That writing turned into a column. That column turned into something of a local institution that still goes on, thirty-three years and counting. My daughters grew up in my column, which made life both interesting and challenging for them—and for me.

Where were the boundaries? Was it fair to share with thousands of readers how Jill fared on her first date? How it felt when Amy and I, the glorious battlers in our family, stormed in and out of each other's lives? When Nancy, the 'baby,' left for college, and I had to leave the door of her room closed for months rather than weep each time I saw it empty?

Because my working life and home life collided constantly, it was sometimes impossible to figure out where one began and the other ended. My daughters were my 'material.' And to make matters more complicated, they could all read by the time I started writing for a living. Never mind that my husband, a judge with a very public life, would have welcomed some privacy.

So in hindsight, would I have done anything—or everything—differently? Did my mommy life and my career have to be so inextricably intertwined? And so consuming?

Yes. No. Maybe . . .

Working from a home office, surrounded by laundry baskets, entertained by cries of 'She hit me first!' and 'I hate her!' and constantly battling the push-pull of Do I beg for an extension on my deadline so that I can go with the Brownie troop to the petting zoo? defined my life for years. Decades.
Like so many working mothers, I seemed in a constant war with myself. And the very nature of my work—revelation—meant that I often spilled the beans on my family to my readers.

All these years later, my daughters tell me that despite their furies, despite the times they slammed their doors in my face as if to say, 'This will keep you out of my life,' they kind of liked their celebrity. Now they tell me that it was 'cool' to have a mom who made them, well, kind of famous in the local sense.
What makes all of this seem to have yet another life is that now I'm writing about their children, our seven brilliant, beautiful, and altogether stupendous grandchildren!

'Grandma, stop writing about me!' the 'larges,' as we call the older children of the bunch, lament. But I've been this route before, and I strongly suspect that Hannah, Isaiah, Sam, and Jonah don't really mean it. I've even overheard them boasting to their schoolyard buddies, 'My name was in the paper again!'
The 'smalls,' Danny, Emily, and Carly, can't read yet. I count it as a blessing, for now.

So will I go on doing this? Will I shamelessly make my life as a wife, mother, grandmother, woman—and my career—a complicated fusion?
I'm afraid so.

Because 'living out loud' as the wonderful writer Anna Quindlen calls it, can become gloriously, hopelessly �addictive.

“Hubris: The Troubling Science, Economics, and Politics of Climate Change” by Michael Hart is a superb

scholarly analysis of an enormous amount of data on the subject of Climate Change, a topic that has

dominated the news for the last decade. The discussions presented deal with the political, economic and

scientific elements that are central to this complex issue. I must admit it took me some time to review

and digest the amazing amount of data and citations presented in this 500+ page volume, a work that

took a decade to construct.

I am a geologist and have been studying this topic for over six years in a non-official capacity and am

well aware of many of the key scientific topics Mr. Hart references. It is not often that one comes across

a book that encapsulates all that is currently recognized as essential to understanding the topic of

anthropogenic carbon dioxide induced “climate change” (for lack of a better phrase). I was surprised to

find out that Mr. Hart was Professor Emeritus of International Affairs at Carleton University in Ottawa,

Canada and not a scientist since his insight into scientific matters is acute. His analysis of the

precautionary principle which appears to be a very pervasive and persuasive argument used by

environmentalists is effectively criticized at length in his treatise. The role of policy makers and

politicians is particularly interesting since the role of risk is not often discussed in detail regarding this

topic. He states, “No government should entertain policy choices with such momentous negative

consequences without a much firmer basis in both science and economics.”

“Hubris” addresses all of the tough technical details of this debate from poor science, biased scientific

data to actual blatant data cherry-picking and data manipulation. These issues are known to those who

have researched the subject but apparently not to well known to the public at large or even to most of

the IPCC delegates. Among other topics he discusses the inherent problems associated with computer

models that have been used as “scientific data”, the important role of clouds and water vapor in

negating the importance of anthropogenic carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and the importance of

satellite data that do not show warming of the troposphere, just to name a few of the myriad of facts

that are detailed. “Hubris” effectively mines existing climate studies and explains how little is really

known about a system as complex and chaotic as the climate system.

Many scientists know what the drawbacks of going against the “established truth” particularly in this

field. It is to his credit and courage that Mr. Hart self-published this incredibly comprehensive treatise. I

suggest anyone interested in learning the underlying elements of climate change to purchase “Hubris:

The Troubling Science, Economics, and Politics of Climate Change” as reference material.

Ages 4-6. As the subtitle indicates, this book is different from much of Carle's other work: it doesn't deal with the natural world. Carle's collage technique will be familiar, but the story concerns a little boy who helps his uncle Adam, a plasterer. Uncle Adam wears an apron for his work, and Aunt Elizabeth sews a smaller version for little Eric (one is included in a plastic case attached to back of the book). The narrative is brief and straightforward, with the text set in bold black letters that pick up the black lines Carle uses to outline shapes in his pictures. Children will easily identify with Adam's pleasure at being allowed to help out in the adult world, and the story concentrates on the garment as a useful piece of clothing rather than as a gender marker. My Apron: A story from my childhood

My Apron is the story of a small boy who idealizes his uncle who is a laborer, specifically a plasterer. The uncle's uniform is a long white apron with a large pocket on the front. The boy's aunt sews him an apron like his uncle's and the boy spends the day helping his uncle lay plaster. The boy feels proud of his accomplishments and forms a warm bond with his uncle through the experience of working together.
My 2 1/2 year old son loves this book. He walks around the house with it saying, "Mommy, this is 'My Apron,' I love this book!" That speaks volumes to his mommy!

Beautiful Art, and Toddler Loves the Story!

MY APRON is yet another excellent book from Eric Carle. Everyone at our house (toddler, mom and dad) loves this book.

The art in MY APRON has a somewhat different look for Carle. The pictures combine tissue paper collage in brilliant colors with dark black lines that combine to communicate the simplicity and excitement of the story. The illustrations also have a real love and respect for the manual labor of building that the uncle (a plasterer) is part of.

The story is great. It is a short vignette (autobiographical according to the afterword) about a boy's visit to his aunt and uncle. His aunt, seeing his excitement about it, makes him an apron just like his uncle's. He then gets to go spend a day at work with his uncle, where he gets to help him. They spend a long day at work.

One comment that his uncle makes that we hear is that the boy is "a good helper," and we see the boy repeat that comment to himself as he continues to work with his uncle. Our toddler picked up on that comment immediately. It is something that children love to hear, and I think he identifies with the boy in the story and the magic of getting to help at real work. At two, our boy is very interested in the work we grown-ups do, and loves to help. This book fits right in with that.

This is a wonderful book. We highly, HIGHLY recommend it!

is a smaller version almost word for word from other book I ordered called The Indian Herbalogy of North America This was disappointing as i ordered one for myself and another for a friend who already had that other book. If you don't have the other book this is an excellent resource.

Very useful.

This is a very interesting book to use and to study. You'll find all sorts of things you never knew before. Things that you'll be thankful you knew in the future. It's also a great reference book for natural cures and treatments to various minor (or major) medical situations.

It's easy to navigate, easy to read, and easy to get what you need or want to know from it quickly :) Fantastic book to read, especially if you live in the country, or the woods.

A necessary book for the MDE discipline ...

I rated this book with 5 stars because it is a book that fills a gap between the theory and practice in MDE. The book integrates the differents areas of MDE in one place and put them in a good perspective with a conceptual and integrated view. Because this knowledge area is new, is not common to find a book which explains all the implicated aspects. Brambilla, Cabot and Wimmer did it, excelent decision. The book includes an example of conceptual modeling showing the diferents techniques, tools and practices (based on Eclipse tools) that results very illustrative.

Good introduction and catch up to the MDSE scene having seen early incarnations 5-8 years ago. Allowed me to formalize and correct some ideas I had in my head. Definitely worth a read if your looking at this area even if it's just to understand the negative feedback it gets from non believers and to look at the actual complexity of the problem it's trying to solve. Thought it was a little biased to EMF, but maybe I need a second read.

Brambilla, Cabot and Wimmer wrote an excellent book. I think that the book is a good contribution for Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) because the authors include a lot of MDE concepts with illustrative examples (modeling, transformation models, ). The book systematically explains the basic concepts of MDE, transformations and DSML (foundations and relationships) . The book allowed me to organize my ideas about MDE and MDSE because I think that the book is well organized.

I like this book very much.

I didn't think it would help as much as it did.

Within an hour I had drawn several very quality cartoon animals. My wife and I were both impressed.

It still takes me a long time to make the drawing, but I feel the speed with improve with practice.

My drawings were all progressivly better as well, as I became more familiar with reoccuring concepts, like: sketch lightly, use basic shapes and adjust them, etc.

While I drew several different animals some of the component parts were the same and it helped.

I wish I had received this when I was a kid, I could work for Disney right now!

This book is by far the best one in my collection:) It's stuffed with inspirational pictures and it's very easy to read:) It took me only about a half hour to create my very own cartoon character after reading a bit in this book:D

The step-by-step drawing guides in here are so easy to follow, and the book also show you different degrees of hardships in creating a character. You have the easily drawn characters, the medium hard-to-draw characters, and the really hard-to-draw characters:S

I'd say i was already in the "Medium" category when i bought this book, so the easily drawn characters were just to simple for me to even bother with. But still, they make good reference::)

If i am to say something about what audience this book is aimed for, then i'd have to say it's for beginners and people like me(A bit past beginner:p). There are VERY few hard-to-draw pictures in here, so i'm gonna have to buy another book soon if i keep progressing like i do:p

Different animals you can learn to draw from this book: Cats, dogs, horses, sharks, elephants, lions, tigers, bears and a few other critters...

I love this book :) I do not regret buying it at all:) I can actually REALLY reccomend this book to people who are out for learning this subject:)

Meena Kumar, one of four nonwhite kids in her school, spends her time eavesdropping on the Yard Ladies, lying to her parents, perfecting her accent, and chasing after Anita Rutter and her gang. Even the arrival of a new brother and a visit from her grandmother do not manage to keep Meena out of trouble. It is only when Meena stands up to Anita's racist boyfriend, Sam, that things begin to change. Syal gives the reader a real feel for the neighborhood and its residents. At times you can almost smell the fish fingers and hear the Yard Ladies yelling back and forth over their fences. Syal has a gift of comedy that she uses to weave this delightful story. Nine-year-old Meena Kumar's cheeky narrative of her life as the only Punjabi girl in a small English village unfolds through wonderfully evocative description. Tollington, a once-thriving Midlands mining village, is, in the early '70s, on the decline. When the mines shut down, the men are idled while the town's suddenly assertive women form the Ballbearings Committee, a name to designate their employment at the local factory (among other things). A highway threatens to take away part of the village, the grammar school is closing down, skinheads are beginning to loiter in the kiddie park, and suburban sprawl is inching closer. These ominous changes form the background of the inventive Meena's life. She is alternately amused and embarrassed by her family and idolizes the roughest, brassiest girl in town, Anita Rutter. Meena is, much to her parents' chagrin, no angel: She lies, commits minor thefts, and has the bad habit of making vulgar remarks when her prim and proper aunties are around. Each small incident that Meena tells about leads to an arsenal of vividly described related anecdotes before the linear narrative is finally regained, a process that forms an endearing, richly three- dimensional picture of Meena and her family. Meanwhile, the story of the girl's relationship with Anita nicely illuminates the difficult, unspoken politics of childhood friendship. The two girls lead a gang, bully others, and engage in exuberant antics even though, in an increasingly poor and tense England, there is always an ominous undercurrent to events. Anita's black poodle is named ``Nigger,'' a local Indian bank manager is the victim of a racial attack, and Meena's secret love becomes a boot-stomping skinhead. Meena's loss of innocence, and her recognition of her heritage, coincides with her realization that her seemingly harmonious village also harbors violence, hatred, and fear. Syal handles all of this with an expert hand. It's an engaging and funny tale set in a tight knit community about a young girl trying to decide her cultural identity and I look forward immensely to realising it on stage.' A good story of any family down the street.

I wouldn't say there was a plot to this book, but I also wouldn't say that it really needed one. The story centers around Meena, a girl whose parents immigrated to England from India and is having to deal with the prejudices of a town that doesn't really accept them. There is some entertainment within these pages, just as there are some touching moments and memorable sections that will stay with me for a while. All those things said, I don't know that I really bonded with the book the way some readers have and I think that is because I couldn't really bond with the characters. That is only my personal shortcoming, however. I kept looking at all of the interactions between Meena and her peers and thought I couldn't ever see myself in these situations, so of course I couldn't really accept most of it into my reading conscious the way I wanted to.

I can't deny that the book deserved the attention it has gotten, having been longlisted for the Women's Prize. There is plenty of human observation in here and there are a lot of personal stories that many will be able to relate to. This is a well written book and I'm glad I picked it up.
