Hooray for more Curlilocks!

I loved getting to know sweet and precocious Curlilocks in the author's first book (Curlilocks and the Three Pink Pandas). But what a treat to see Curlilocks step into her own adventure as she struggles and fails to resist sampling the three delicious pies baked by her Daddy for her aunties. The writing here is lyrical enough to keep my baby interested, and playful and evocative enough to enchant my six year old. Five stars for Curlilocks, and especially her well-drawn and delightfully unique aunties.

Charmed

My 7 yo daughter and I were both charmed by the latest Curlilocks adventure. (We’re fans of the original, too!) The author takes elements from classic fairy tales and updates them to better mirror today’s world and modern parenting sensibilities, while keeping the fantasy & magic of the original. The illustrations are filled with wonderful details that add even more richness to the tale.

Adorable and Enriching Read. Valuable lesson.

Curlilocks learns a lesson about the value of telling the truth in this magical follow up to her adventure with the Pink Pandas. The story captures kids' imaginations and keeps them turning pages. The dialogue between Curlilocks and her magical hairbrush each time she lies will no doubt encourage kids to consider their own motivation behind would-be unfavorable behaviors. Super cute.

About the Author
Rebecca Elliott has a Masters Degree in Statistics from Purdue University. She began her career with General Motors, supporting Current Product Manufacturing. She moved to Salt Lake City where she taught statistics at the University of Utah and developed the precursor to Learning SAS in the Computer Lab. She spent one year working for a survey research firm. She also provided statistical support through independent consulting. A native Hoosier, she has worked in Indianapolis for the past 10 years in the pharmaceutical industry supporting the manufacture of injectible drugs. Rebecca enjoys hiking in the desert, creating art with fabric, rooting for her team the WNBA Indiana Fever, traveling to sunny spots, and being on a spiritual path.

Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Christopher Morrell obtained a bachelor's degree at the University of Cape Town and a Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since then he has been a member of the Mathematical Sciences Department at Loyola College in Maryland, and teaches various undergraduate statistics courses. In addition, he was chair of the department from 2000 through 2006. Professor Morrell's research involves statistical models that are used to describe repeated observations from longitudinal studies of aging. His statistical work has appeared in Journal of the American Statistical Association, Biometrics, Technometrics, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series A & C, The American Statistician, Statistics in Medicine, and Communications in Statistics. He is also a co-author (with colleagues from the National Institute on Aging) on research that has appeared in numerous medical journals.

Very good book for beginners

I did not know a thing about SAS programming before I got hold of this book. This book is very simple to read. You learn the basics of SAS programming with the minimum of effort. It comes with a data disk that contains all the data sets you need to do the exercises in the book. This saves you the trouble of typing in the data. I strongly recommend this book.

Datasets all present now

The problem with some datasets being not available has been taken care of by Duxbury. This is a good reference for those beginning students who need to use SAS and who want some guidance by example of how to implement selected statistical procedures using SAS.

Perfect for starting to learn SAS code

I have been teaching SAS for 10 years and never found a satisfactory book ... until now. This book covers the core material for data manipulation and the most common statistical analysis at an ideal depth. The topics and code are presented in enough detail that the material is easy to follow and not so slogged down in detail that it will stop the novice. Beyond the usual material there is stand-out coverage of a couple intermediate level topics like macro language (for automating repeated tasks) and IML (for matrix algebra).

There are a couple things missing from the book. Proc SQL (used to manipulate data from a data base perspective) is totally absent as well as the features of modern SAS, like ODS graphics and proc sgplot (which are used to make photo ready graphics). The other weakness in the book is its obvious age. For better or worse, the code in this book should work on any version starting with SAS 6.12. The more modern versions of SAS (and SAS Enterprise Guide) have greatly improved usability and a lot of features that make graphics and reports look much better. You will want to supplement this book with a more up-to-date book like The Little SAS Book: A Primer, Fourth Edition or The Little SAS Book for Enterprise Guide 4.1 to get hints at the new features.

Dispite the weaknesses, if you are a novice this is a great place to start to learn SAS code.

A Treasure Trove of Erroneous Information

Eiichiro Oda created a unique and complicated world when he created One Piece. From the myriad of characters to the vast number of locations, even the more seasoned One Piece fans may need to look up a fact or two while reading and watching this popular manga and anime series. At first glance one would think "The One Piece Adventurer" would be an ideal little reference book. Although there are a number of excellent in depth books printed in Japanese surrounding the One Piece world, there have been no such books published in English. Unfortunately for us One Piece fans, this book - which could have been a true treasure - should never have been published. It is riddled with blatant erroneous information, inconsistences in facts and spellings, and on many occasions the two authors take great liberties by stating things as facts that are either grossly incorrect or Oda himself has never clarified. Because of possible spoilers I included a small sampling of errors at the end of the review.

At first, I was impressed that the authors decided to use the true names of the characters (Zoro not Zolo, Ace not Trace, etc) and the Japanese names of the Devil Fruits. But as I looked deeper it was obvious that they couldn't seem to agree on what name to use for many of the characters/items, which makes things extremely confusing. For example Jaguar D. Saul is often referred to as Hagwor D. Sawaro, Porche as Borchie, and Yubashiri as Yukibashi. Luffy's Devil Fruit is referred to as Gomu Gomu no Mi, Gum Gum Fruit, and Gom Gom Fruit. There is no consistency at all throughout the book.

The authors also seem to have an odd view in regards to what information should be included and what should not. They list incredibly obscure locations, like the name of a storefront, but many pivotal characters are either not mentioned at all or are only vaguely referenced.

If you are a fan of One Piece look elsewhere for your information. There are a number of very comprehensive and accurate websites developed by fans that will contain all the information in this book plus so much more. Save your money for upcoming One Piece manga and anime DVD's and pass this book by.

Here are a few direct quotes to give readers an idea of the errors contained in the book:

"Luffy is one of the first to set out on the open seas in search of One Piece." (In actuality pirates had been searching for One Piece for over 20 years before Luffy had even become a pirate.) (pg 14)

"Although Luffy was rescued without harm, at that very moment, Shanks himself was attacked by another pirate and lost his right arm." (Shanks lost his left arm, not to another pirate, but to a Sea King) (pg 44)

States Luffy's bounty is 30 million since "the beginning". (Luffy does not have a bounty until he defeats Arlong) (pg 54)

"When Bellamy meets Luffy for the first time, he knows that Luffy's bounty is 300 million Berri." (Luffy does not have a 300 million bounty until much later in the series.) (pg 109)

(In regards to Skypiea) "...there also is another species of people, like the Konis, who have wings on their backs, like angels." (Conis/Konis is the name of one person of this race, not the name of the entire race) (pg 34)

"Marshall Teach, the man who formed the Whitebeard Pirates." (Marshall D. Teach, aka Blackbeard, was a member of the Whitebeard Pirates, not the founder.) (pg 46)

In regards to the "shootout" between Luffy and Usopp - "Usopp was defeated and consequently chased away by his comrades." (Usopp challenged Luffy to a fight, not a shootout. Usopp was defeated, but the Strawhats never chased him away. In fact they left the Going Merry in his possession.) (pg 78)
