In this fascinating study, Keith Allan and Kate Burridge examine the linguistic, social, and psychological aspects of this intriguing universal practice. They cover the many shapes euphemism can take, from circumlocution and acronym to hyperbole and understatement, metaphor, and even technical jargon (many medical terms ultimately derive from euphemisms--stool, for instance, comes from "go to the stool," and diabetes comes from a Greek word meaning "to go a lot," since people with diabetes urinate frequently). They discuss the many euphemisms and dysphemisms for tabooed body parts (there are, the authors point out, at least 1,200 terms for vagina and 1,000 for penis), bodily functions, death, and disease. They describe euphemisms used to avoid religious blasphemy, from the archaic "egad" and "zounds" and "gadzooks" to the modern equivalents, such as "Jiminy Cricket" and "golly" or "gosh." They even discuss the political use of euphemism; for instance, when at war, to shield the public from upsetting details (or shield politicians from the voter), concentration camps become "pacification centers," bombing raids become "surgical strikes," and bombs dropped on our own troops become "friendly fire." (President Reagan, a master of euphemism, insisted that the attack on Grenada was not an "invasion," but rather a "rescue mission.") Along the way, the authors provide illuminating discussions of word origins, the use of bawdy language in Shakespeare, and many other fascinating topics.
With thousands of examples drawn from speech, literature, newspapers, television, and film, Allan and Burridge invite us all to ponder and enjoy the creative products of the human mind as it confronts the problem of talking in different contexts about sex, lust, disapproval, anger, disease, death, fear, and God.

About the Author
John Ridley is the Malcolm McCallum Chair of Economic Geology at Colorado State University where he has taught ore deposit geology and field geology for the past seven years. His earlier academic positions spanned three other continents, with positions at universities in Australia, Switzerland and Zimbabwe, and over his career he has taught courses in geochemistry, petrology and structural geology. Professor Ridley has published over seventy articles in refereed journals and books, in addition to geological maps and reports for companies and groups within the mining and minerals industries.

Very well executed

A clear and concise up-to-date explanation of ore types and geochemical formation processes. The author carefully organizes and summarizes information without delving too far into poorly-supported alternatives, yet does not fail to mention secondary factors that may play a role. The result is a text full of relevant, organized information, and very little of the tedium that crops up somewhere in most texts. Professor Ridley also eschews informative geochemical diagrams like those showing stability of iron and manganese sulfides, oxides, and carbonates, which might be considered a fault; but these diagrams require a lot of expert interpretation and a grasp of relevance to actual contexts so the author provides the interpretation instead. Even the descriptions and maps of actual deposits around the world appear to have been carefully filtered to best exemplify the processes (rather than simply using the most thoroughly studied locations).

Outstanding text on Ore Formations.

This is a very comprehensive book on ore formations. The sections on hydrothermal processes is exceptional and exhaustive. While well written, to fully gain the knowledge contained, it has to read several times. There is a lot of information presented which takes a bit of effort to absorb. This is a must read for anyone trying to understand the genesis and morphology of economic minerals.

Book Review, Notes of a Book Lover.com I am not a student of politics nor current affairs. As such, I am unable to critique on the validity of the opinions and arguments stated in the book. However, as a layman, I am able to provide you with my opinions of the book. First and foremost, I enjoyed reading this book immensely! This was definitely a feat because I have never been interested in current affairs or politics. To be honest, I am rather apathetic about current affairs (totally bad, I know). However, Tom Plate's writing style was so interesting that this book captured my attention throughout! Second, this book provided me with so much information and insights into Asia and the relationships between the Asian countries and other countries. Most importantly, this book has ignited an interest in apathetic me to understand more about current affairs. In conclusion, I enjoyed reading this book and have learnt much about Asia and its relations with other countries. More importantly, this book has ignited an interest in apathetic me to understand more about current affairs. As such, I highly recommend this book to all who are interested in politics, current affairs or Asia.

Thanks to my Asia reporter!

I wouldn’t know very much about the vibrant, complex and diverse countries of Asia without Tom Plate’s first-hand coverage over the years, for the LA Times and then as a journalist and university professor. He knew way back, and seemingly only he, that a very big story was developing. It’s downright dramatic to read so many of his columns one after another in this fascinating recounting of Asia’s emergence onto the global economic and geopolitical stage. There’s something refreshingly accessible about Plate’s “your man on the scene” kind of reporting. It is far from the this-happened-here-that-happened-there kind of news about a distant country or event, and even farther from the sound bites we’re used to seeing on TV. Plate is there, talking and interacting with people, taking in the environments. You get to see Asia through is eyes and sensibilities. His accounts are very sophisticated and smart and yet convey his very personal reactions to the people he interviews and events he witnesses. He’s got opinions and isn’t shy about sharing them, but if we were there too we’d probably feel the same way. Long may Plate be there for us and write!
