A very personal and human view of graph theory

This is a unique book. Tutte covers a collection of problems that interested him throughout all his years of studying graph theory, and the detective work that went into finding their solutions. Most start with or relate to the Trinity Four, his group of like-minded fellow undergraduates that conjectured about problems, most of which seem to have to boiled down into graph theory. The tales are fascinating in their recollection of how different ideas came together to form solutions. The solutions are all elegant and ingenious and a pleasure to behold in this explanatory light.

Most problems are presented requiring a minimal amount of background knowledge, though a certain degree of mathematical maturity is required (and necessary to fully appreciate things), and having a taken a course on graph theory would ease the digestion of some parts. Owing to the informal discourse, there is no dense theorem-proof-theorem-... division of the material. Rather, it is organized by some sort of problem-(fiddling around)-inspiration-(fiddling around)-eureka! format. But, Tutte keeps everything rigorous and easy to follow. Though, when things would get too tangentially technical, he resorts to illustrative examples. The references are complete, so anyone looking for more detail is taken care of.

I believe most aspiring graph theorists would benefit from and relish this book by a master of the subject (and a grandfather to much of it).

High praise for William F. Buckley, Jr. ~ again.

William F. Buckley introduced to our Republic the undermining of the nation’s higher education via an unfortunate and relentless liberal agenda within academia. This Buckley classic reveals a disease that had infected most universities by the end of World War II ~ atheism and socialism. This book is an easy read and is a remarkable cultural achievement by the then 25 year old Buckley.

The forgotten subtitle of Buckley's book "academic freedom is a superstition" in America was correct and has been since the late 1890's when religious associations with their founding Christian churches were severed. The antecedents to both atheism and socialism within higher academia by 1900 were cast aside in the name of academic freedom of expression and progressiveness. Yale long ago lost the traditional values that placed it, at one time, among the nation’s elite.

Buckley pointed insight still rings true; "Freedom breeds inequality. Unless you have freedom to be unequal, there is no such thing as freedom."

There was no academic freedom at Yale in 1951 (or as early as the late 1890's) and there is certainly no freedom there now. If anything, this malignancy of academic bigotry (which Buckley so eloquently describes) has metastasized to the point that certain death awaits any Man who seeks God within the halls of Yale University.

Buckley is humorous while exposing the anti-Christian bigotry of the "sophisticated," "open-minded," and "tolerant" Left. No wonder the leaders of Yale hated Buckley's book. They prefer that parents and contributors send in their money without any pesky questions about what Yale was teaching.

Recommended, with reservations

God and Man at Yale is not a literary must-read, but it ranks among the classics of political and journalistic writing. The ideas presented are narrow in scope (as they should be), focusing exclusively on Yale, and the solutions presented by a 25-year-old Buckley are implausible (alumni do not hold any sway on the university). Gamay is the fascinating introduction of a budding writer whose career would be made on impulsive ideas, quick wit, and idiosyncratic writing style. Buyers considering this book should expect a dry read except for the introduction by Bramwell and foreword written by Buckley for the anniversary edition.

Amazing & Riveting

Oh wow! A Hunger So Wild is the second book in the Renegade Angel series. And it follows right from where the first book, A Touch of Crimson - Adrian & Lindsays' story, finishes at. This is Elijah & Vashti's story. If you havent read the first book, you must, because you're missing out on all the character & storyline developments to begin with.

A Hunger so Wild begins in the wake of the Lycan revolution and a viral outbreak among the vampire minions that puts the Sentinel (angels) in a vulnerable position. Their security has been breached leaving a series of betrayal among all 3 clans.

Syre, the leader of the Fallen (vampires) takes advantage of the sentinels vulnerability and sends Vashti, his second-in-command to conduct an allegiance with the Lycans. Despite her hatred for the 'dogs' she obeys her commander and meets with the Alpha of the Lycans, Elijah, whom she suspects is the murderer of her friend.

Elijah, the most dominant of lycans (and one of Adrians most loyal subjects), has been forced to take upon the position as the Alpha of the Lycans despite the consequences he may face from the sentinels.

Vashti, the second most powerful vampire surprisingly discovers that Elijah happens to be her equal that she never thought she would encounter after losing her mate in the past. Their sexual desires for each other soon develops much deeper than they thought that it conflicts with their loyalty for their own kind. Until they can no longer resist each other they have to come to an agreement that will keep them bound together forever.

This book had me hooked from page 1. There's so much more I want to say in this review but I dont want to spoil it for anyone. Im disappointed that it had to end. I just cant get enough of this series that I just want more more more!! And unfortunately I have to suffer and wait the many months for the 3rd book to come.

Sylvia is now officially my most favorite Author. Every single book I have read so far of hers (the crossfire novels as well) has had me in love with her writing.

I would highly recommend this series to anyone that loves paranormal books with HOT SEXY ALPHA HEROES & HEROINES.

A Hunger So Wild is the second in the author's new Renegade Angels series. This book can easily be read by itself as the powerful second in command to the `evil' vampire population, named Vashti is severely tested.

Vashti is a fallen angel who was been punished by being transformed into a bloodsucking vampire. Although fallen, she was content, until the love of her life was killed by lycans. Since that time she has vowed to find his killers and exact her revenge. But without her love, Vashti's confidence has taken a toll. However, she hides this `weakness' behind a mask of cold efficiency for her leader Syre. But trouble brews when a mysterious deadly disease suddenly targets vampires. Unfortunately, the virus is spreading fast and they need help. Syre commands Vashti to seek out their old enemy the lycans. (Lycans were the loyal soldiers of angels sent to keep the vampires in check. But tired of being treated poorly, a large group rebelled and live on the edge of society.) For Syre realizes that the lycans may be open to mutual negotiation in their weakened state. Syre want Vashti to form an alliance to help battle the deadly virus and have added protection from the angels. Vashti grudgingly agrees only to meet with their leader, a reluctant alpha name Elijah.

Elijah has been trying to keep his splintered group alive and together. However, he quickly realizes that the vampires need his help and he isn't above using their desperation for his own needs. But when Vashti and Elijah meet they are stunned by their combustible attraction and the realization that Vashti killed Elijah's friend. They make a deal. Vashti's life for the name of the lycans who killed her lover. But all is not what is seems. And what happens when they uncover a plot that is meant to destroy both of their groups. Can they work together or will passion get in the way?

This book has a lot of attitude and is more thrilling than the first. The action starts immediately. In the first book, A Touch of Crimson, the heroine took a while to learn her abilities but Vashti is in her prime and not afraid to get a bit rough when needed. I was spellbound especially as the diabolical plot behind the death of Vashti's lover's was revealed. The ultimate vampire villain Syre has become one of my favorite characters. He is fascinating and even likeable as his motivations and histories are unveiled. The two main characters are kick a##! I particularly liked that Vashti and Elijah are confident in their powers and strong willed -a fantastic match! They definitely don't take any crap from anyone.

The past tension between the two fractions make for exciting reading. But what I loved was the sheer animal magnetism between the Elijah and Vashti. They literally can't keep themselves away from each other. I could feel their animosity but also the of control lust that burns between them. And the pages heat up as they search for the cure for the virus and try to find those responsible for the death of the Vashti's lover.

I highly recommend this spectacular paranormal read.

In A Hunger So Wild "the enemy of my enemy" is not exactly a friend but an ally born of mutual necessity. The Fallen(vampire) and the Lycan have a good reason for distrusting each other, but with a common enemy and a dire situation for the Fallen, the two races team up and the Fallen's second, Vashti, becomes liaison to the Lycans, despite the fact the she hates 'dogs' for killing her mate and must deal directly with the Lycan's alpha, Elijah, who she's sworn to kill for a more recent crime. And Vashti is on Elijah's kill list as well for murdering his best friend, but they'll work together for now, kill each other when they're done, and lust with a wild feral hunger for each other in the meantime.

A Hunger So Wild was so good. There is a decent amount of touch up with the past leads, Lindsay and Adrian, from the first book A Touch of Crimson, since the background story involves a conspiracy that impacts all three of the groups with past and present angelic ties. And I liked that there is good amount of development of relationships beyond the romantic ones in the cast - Elijah's friendship with Lindsay, Fallen leader Sayre's with Vashti, and a newly developing connection between Sayre and the fledgling who formerly housed the soul of his nephalim daughter.

I also really liked the enemies to lovers romance between Vashti and Elijah. There's a intense, wild, and almost feral chemistry between these leads. However, with two strong and dangerous beings who value control in the mix and so many reasons why a relationship between them is wrong - personal baggage and tested loyalties both - the course of their relationship is far from smooth (and their physical connection starts off with a scene that transitions briefly into iffy consent. ) But the conflicted lustiness makes for some very steamy times between them and I liked the final resolution for the pair in which they make a place for their relationship in a world where their pairing doesn't fit nicely.

For those curious about whether author Day ties the two Renegade shorts into the main story line, both of the pairings from those stories (A Dark Kiss of Rapture and A Caress of Wings) are mentioned briefly, but Raze's looks to be still in progress. Oh and for fans of Day's Marked series (Eve of Destruction, Eve of Chaos, Eve of Darkness) - which shares the same world as this series - there is a brief cameo by Eve, that series' heroine which is fun, but not enough to really catch up with her.

So, I really liked this steamy and satisfying addition to Day's Renegade Angel series and am really curious about how the background plot is going to unfold and I am also really looking forward to seeing Sayre in the lead - Day did a really good job of whetting my appetite for more of his character

Reads like a comic book. Superb Gift, Good teaching tool.

I disagree with the review written by Andrew B. Morseman on September 20, 2000, and I strongly recommend this book for teachers of higher elementary grades and summer or Vacation Bible schools. I respect his opinion, which is why I am rebutting it here, legally, in view of the public.
This book is an excellent way to expose older children and young teens to the bible as religious literature, or as educational literature, because it synopsizes events, clarifies characters, and artfully omits some of the vissictudes and harsher realities of ancient times.
While not fully accurate to the facts, the general events and key characters are magnified as the centers of the stories, with geneaologies of the Hebrew and Israelic ancestors telescoped or omitted. Most children do not have the attention span or interest to digest the historical record-keeping which the bible contains, and many are not ready to deal with the full goriness of bloodshed, sex, and intricate conspiracy which dominates all of human history. The Picture Bible dances around many such events which are distracting with regard to the main storyline, (i.e. the rape of Tamar does not directly affect the life or rule of David) omitting irrelevancies and euphemizing "mature" material.
The illustrations cleverly indicate the characters, their moods, and the passage of time, to project a limited idea of the timeframe of the individual stories, the scope of indivdual storylines, and people interweave seamlessly as individuals from one story to another. The chapter divisions are marvelously episodic, and clearly identify the biblical texts from which they are derived.
Books paraphrazed or synopsized, but not omitted from mention, are the major and minor prophets, the Psalms, the Proverbs, and the Song of Solomon. swaths of the Pentateuch are left out, and the Letters and travels of Paul, the other events in Acts and the other letters, and the Revelation of St. John are all synopsized or given prominent mention. Every book of the canonical Bible is conspicuously mentioned at some point. The meaning of the prophetic books is under much debate and is largely a conceptual or spiritual problem, not suited for younger ages. The books of Psalms, Proverbs, and Song of Solomon (a.k.a. Canticles) are mentioned but left out because they contain no story material of themselves. Leviticus and Deuteronomy contain almost nothing but the Mosaic Law, which is of little or no interest to young minds (the Ten Commandments are stated Verbatim from the King James Bible on a separate illustrated page), and other books contain material that simply can't be worked into a storybook grounded in corporeal facts and events.
As to inerrancy and infallibility; only the Truth Himself is inerrant and infallible; there are many nuances of bare facts that have been lost to history and translation, and bibles as late as the King James and Douday Original Version have been shown to contain errors of translation, content, and meaning, while scripts like the Latin Vulgate of St. Jerome were rejected as un-canonical although they contained neither gross nor suttle errors of meaning or doctrine. Even today books touted as Bibles contain many errors that do disservice to both Christian Doctrine and scholarly and literary accuracy. The admitted errancy of this book is not that of a knave, but of a knight. It is fallible so that it might be more authentic, and less artifical. I think it is very useful as a stepping stone, even if it isn't the Rock of Truth.
I first studied Christian Literature using this bible, and when I dug into the King James version, I didn't get lost becuase I already knew the main storyline, and could identify key characters. I also did not find the omissions to be misleading or ingenuine to the stories themselves, or discredit the characters or ideas presented in the stories.
All in all, this is a wonderful book for older preteen readers; it conveys the key events and ideas found in the bible, has skilled and meaningful illustration (which helps the story along as much as the dialogue) and presents religious truth without any authoritative invocation or declaration. I like the content, but I would change the title to "The Comic Book Bible."

Awsome comic Bible

My 9 year old son received this Bible for christmas last year and in one year he read it from cover to cover 7 times. He loves it.

This is how I still picture Bible characters.

Throughout our elementary school years, my sister and I did our nightly "devotions" using this comic book Bible. Though I'm now 29 years old, I still imagine all the events in the Bible just the way this comic book portrays them.

My own young children have been given many Bible story books, but most of them focus only on the cute, feel-good stories such as Noah's ark, baby Moses floating in the reed basket, and baby Jesus in the manger. The Picture Bible, on the other hand, contains a much broader story selection, even some more graphic drawings, such as Goliath being slain by David. (Don't worry, it's not TOO graphic.)

There's only one problem with this "Bible:" The characters look quite caucasian. The drawings are probably not ethnically accurate.

Jay Wiseman (Jay Joseph Wiseman)(born 1949) is an American BDSM writer and speaker. In 1991, Wiseman started the Greenery Press publishing house with his partner Janet Hardy, author "Lady Green" of The Sexually Dominant Woman. The publishing house grew to the point of publishing several titles a year, and they hired two other employees. As of 2006, Wiseman has written 11 books and dozens of articles in magazines from Playboy to Redbook.

Outdated, But Still Useful

This is a pretty good introduction for someone new to the BDSM scene, or someone on the outside who wants to know what all the fuss is about. The tone is casual, but professional, and Wiseman includes plenty of personal stories. I know anecdotal evidence isn't always the best, but it's a lot more effective to say "I personally know someone who was injured in this way," than to caution "If you do this wrong, such and such injuries might happen."

IMPORTANT: The book is several years out of date. Most of his advice is still good- paddles will still bruise less than canes, bound submissives are likely to fall on stairs, that sort of thing. HOWEVER: Wiseman frequently plays up the wonders of the spermicide nonoxynol-9, encouraging its use with anyone who isn't outright allergic to it. Nonoxynol-9 was believed to help limit the spread of STDs. This is the opposite of true. Nonoxynol-9 is irritating even if you aren't allergic, and the tiny lesions it causes may increase your chances of catching STDs, especially HIV. It's strictly for contraceptive use only.

The other key advancement made since the publishing of this book is silicone lubricant. Wiseman discusses the difference between water-based and oil-based, but now if you walk into your friendly neighborhood sex shop, you're more likely to find only water-based and silicone-based. Read up on the pros and cons of silicone- it's great stuff, but it does have some drawbacks- and definitely doublecheck whether or not it will stain any props you're using.

Lastly, this book is very much from the point of view of a straight man, and will be most useful (and least offensive) in the hands of other straight men and women. Wiseman seems to think Those Lucky Queers have got off easy with BDSM acceptance, and the Poor Unfortunate Heteros have to work much harder. He also considers bisexuality an alternative lifestyle, and blames over-the-top feminism for making women uncomfortable with submission (personally, I blame the vastly gender-disproportionate rates of sexual assault and abuse).

TL,DR version: overall, it's still a good book, but make sure you get up-to-date information on sexual health. The human body and psyche still work the same way, but the props available are a little different.

A user-friendly introduction

SM 101 was one of the very first books on the subject I read, and the humor, personal tone, and emphasis on safety and consensuality were instrumental in helping me to feel safe in exploring the topic more. Yes, this is a book written by an individual with his occasional quirks and biases, but it's full of great information and resources. It should be on the reading list for every BDSM beginner.

A must have for any BDSM practitioner

For some years now I have heard tell of Jay Wiseman's SM 101. Over a decade after it's initial printing it seems to have become almost canon in the BDSM community. After finally reading it one can clearly see why. Wiseman's book is truly an exceptional work and in my opinion should be a part of every BDSM practitioners library. Weather you're someone with tremendous experience who has spent years in the scene or a novice who is just beginning to explore the world of BDSM this text is a very valuable asset to have. SM 101 is full of useful information that covers everything from basic safety, to techniques, to simple solutions to the various problems one might encounter in a session. This manual is a must read for Dominants and submissives alike. If you are looking for a practical, realistic, down to earth introduction to BDSM or if you're a seasoned player looking to expand your knowledge I can think of no better reading than SM 101.

Not very helpful

I will admit this book explains what CBT is quite well. But its not going to stop me losing my rag or going nutty in queues. The book is just a lot of large print with lots of empty white spaces and questionnaires you need to fill out and silly games you need to play.

Overall a waste of money and even worse a waste of time to read
