About the Author
RAVI ZACHARIAS is the Founder and President of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, with additional offices in Canada, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Austria, South Africa, Spain, and Turkey. Dr. Zacharias and his wife, Margie, have three grown children. He is the author of many books, including Can Man Live Without God and Why Jesus?
DR. VINCE VITALE is Director of the Zacharias Institute. He was educated at Princeton University and the University of Oxford, and later taught philosophy of religion as a faculty member at both universities. During his undergraduate studies at Princeton, Dr. Vitale took an unexpected journey that led him to God. Later, while at Oxford, he developed a new response the problem of evil. Good read

Since graduating from college a few years ago, I’ve been looking for books that would help me develop cultural awareness, lead me in my spiritual path, yet still challenge me intellectually. (Trying to keep sharp!) This was perfect for that.

I’m a huge fan of the Ravi Zacharias & Vince Vitale collaboration, having read their book "Why Suffering?" two years ago. Like their original collaboration, this was written so accessibly. I love the personal stories and illustrations used by both authors. It’s quite relational, and the reader gets a legitimate sense of the warmth and genuine personalities of the authors.

Yet their insights are most valuable. In the chapter on “Scientism” for example, Dr. Vitale explains the fine-tuning argument as a reason for why God exists. Later at the conclusion of the chapter, he connects the philosophical argument with the personal, writing

“God not only designed the universe; he designed Alva [read the chapter for her story], and He named her, and He has plans for her life as carefully fine-tuned as His plan for the cosmos. And the same is true of each of us…May that signify to us that our lives began only because God chose us before the foundation of the world. Because of God, we can know we have a purpose. And if we let Him, God will fine-tune us for life—a life free of shame and guilt, a life full of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

I just thought that was so cool. Not only did it help to learn the fine-tuning argument in the beginning of the chapter, but Vitale made it click* of how a God who fine-tunes the world could fine-tune the humans that he (or she?) created as well.

There are so many gems in this book. I really encourage you to read it, especially if you’re in college or have just graduated. Dr Vitale and Dr Zacharias both address worldviews that I think are more prevalent in the university (and secular culture in general) than the other world religions. I think it’s an absolute must for the college student. Most of my professors/peers/coworkers had/have a worldview defined by Atheism, Scientism, Humanism, Pluralism, Relativism, and Hedonism, and it’s so fascinating to see these different perspectives examined in a gracious manner. The two authors are obvious Evangelical Christians, but I think that they write in such a way that is accessible and helpful to anyone. Check it out!

The authors did a great job comparing Christianity with other world views

The book was thought provoking and well written. The authors did a great job comparing Christianity with other world views. This is a book that makes you think and it is an interesting read with good stories which are weaved into the arguments the authors are making. The authors did a great job showing the weakness of the secular worldview which is manifested in atheist, relativism, humanism, hedonism, scientism and others. This is being contrasted with Christianity in a way that makes one appreciate the coherence of the Christian worldview and how Jesus Christ fills the vacuum that secularism leaves.

The authors are not only great scholars with immense knowledge within philosophy, worldview's and other topics, but are also frequently meeting real people who hold different positions which the book describes. This makes this book personal, real, and scholarly. I enjoyed reading this book a lot and would recommend anyone to get it.

With reason and heart driving the book, Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale lay out the major and influential "partial" truths our culture has been enculturated with, yet ultimately found lacking: Atheism, Scientism, Pluralism, Humanism, Relativism and Hedonism.

Clearly written and imbued with poignant illustrations, heartfelt stories and rational support from the world’s leading Christian (and non-Christian) thinkers, this is a much-needed anchor and stake in this post-truth, post-Christian era.

God’s truth stands: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Matthew 24:35). This is a beautiful, inspiring and thought-provoking book armed with truth and love— it seeks to show that ultimate meaning and purpose point to a God who loves us and seeks for us to know the Truth, which is God Himself.

Pros: Story is on point, as-well-as the action. There is plenty of mature content involved, just as it was in the first book.
Cons: This series can be even more awesome if an editor or proofreader was involved in the process.

You get butt sex! You get butt sex! Everybody gets butt sex!

Needs three things to be perfect. 1. More Possessed. The interaction between Brand/Talon and the others from Earth was a big part of what I liked about the first book. This one sets the stage for direct conflict with the Nameless God, and by extension the Possessed, so only a little miffed. Brand rubs his strength in a few faces, sure, but I want him to take a dump on everyone who ever looked at him funny. 2. More facerolling. I (don't) hate pulling a Veruca Salt, but I want Brand to be able to kill everyone and everything NOW. Screw training. Screw plot. Screw world building. Screw the Ogre. Screw the Svartalfar. Chop off every head in sight without breaking a sweat. Or don't. Whatever. 3. More Perzey. She is/was/is the best character ever. All that crazy...just magical.

This one is all about the build up. Some people will find it a little stretched out on places, but I didn't mind. It's just that the book takes place in small area compared to the first. Staying in one place helps flesh out the background, at least.

Overall, I liked it a lot. Only one real flashback, some world building, Mungo, it's pretty great. Plus, I've never seen the word "catamite" used so much.

I can't say enough great things about this book! I needed to develop an automated technology solution that could capture and analyze HTTP traffic. Good resource for Web development and content management

My guess is that a lot of Fiddler users will agree that it makes good sense to start Fiddler when troubleshooting Web content issues.
Another scenario I use Fiddler for is working on code that calls a Web service. Creating and sharing Fiddler tracelogs is a time saving and productivity boosting habit that should in my opinion be adopted by members of Web content publishing teams.

While Fiddler's user interface is simple and elegant, it initially takes some getting used to. After that, it is very effective for frequent work operations.
Book about what Fiddler can do and how it is supposed to be used is very good news. It should make it easier to dig deeper into Fiddler's functionality and utilize it in a good way.

The book gets five stars from me, because it is well written and immediatelly useful.

A great resource for website troubleshooting

My knowledge and focus is on Network Engineering and Network Security support so having this book to supplement the Fiddler tool has been great. Not only has it empowered me with knowledge to prove that the web/app issues are NOT caused by "the network" or "the firewall", but I am also able to assist in determining the root of the problem in a manner that enables the programmer or web developer to determine what steps need to be taken to resolve the issue.
Although this is more attributed to the Fiddler tool, it would have taken me longer to figure out the tool, if not for this book. It gets straight to the point on what I need to know. Also good visual examples that reinforce the explanations. I have the pdf as well, but I prefer scribbling notes in the book.

This one was bad guys I hated it. Mia talks to her friend Phil aboutsome guy she likes and he tells her he is on the DL. I think I rather read about Phil he seems more interesting. Don't let me get on the editing....felt like I was trying to read the word more than the story.

This book was such a letdown. I give it 2 stars instead of 1 because you can tell there is a storyline there it just doesn't evolve as it should. There is too much mention of irrelevent things and very very very poor editing.

Beautiful watercolour journal

This one's self published in 2013, printed by CreateSpace. Paperback. 62 pages total. About A4 size.

It's a travelogue sketchbook filled with snapshots of Venice in beautiful watercolour sketches. There are the beautiful buildings by water, gondolas, cafes, people and the intricate architecture of the whole place.

I like how he pulls out the little details for more focus, it could be a cup of coffee, statues, hanging lamps, or the fish sold at the markets. There are captions but too brief though. I would love to read more about the place, or even about his adventures while drawing there.

It's a nice addition to the other Venice sketchbooks that I have, namely A Week In Venice by Liz Steel, The Venice Sketchbook by Fabrice Moireau.

Fantastic Book

What a terrific book. The art work is beautiful and it captures the look and the feel of
the city. I hope to find more such travel journals by this artist.

Another thing that is really so great about this book. It's price is $16.00. Not 15.95; not 15.99. It is
$16.00. I wish other publishers would have the guts and the respect for our intelligence to
price their products accordingly.

Fun way to visit Venice

I bought the Venice watercolor travel journal since I have other artists' watercolor journals and enjoy comparing the precise illustrations to the
more relaxed approach in others. In this book, Joaquin Dorao seems to have hit a happy medium. His watercolors are neatly done and the
various sites of an area in Venice are grouped to make an interesting presentation and a fun travelogue.

There are a lot of cobra books out there especially since over the last 3-4 years there has been a surge in interest of the aircraft. I have owned this book for about as long and I never get tired of reading it. What I find the most interesting portion of it is reading about the Marine AH-1T pilots during the operation in Grenada. Mike Verier really knows how to put together a great book. Highly recommended if your a Snake fan.

Absolutely the best! This book gives a complete detailed history of the AH-1 Cobra from the prototype stages to the current model (AH-1F). This book also goes into other attack helicopter prototypes that Bell built along with the SuperCobra - the twin engine Marine version of the AH-1.

Section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act requires that all persons who maintain, service, repair or dispose of appliances that contain regulated refrigerants be certified in proper refrigerant handling techniques.

The EPA has also placed a sales restriction on refrigerants, limiting the sale of regulated refrigerants to certified technicians only.

Technicians who violate the Clean Air Act provisions by be fined, lose their certification, and may be required to appear in Federal court.

Pretty good, but

NOT everything you need to know. While I did pass the test for all three sections and core (i.e. Universal), I would say this book is really only 85% what you need. It is absolutely worth buying, but they need to focus more on the vacuum levels that need to be achieved. The actual dates were not tested such that you were quizzed what date any particular restriction went into effect. At least not on my test... Though the test did have some dates. I would have given this four (4) stars being it is worth 85%, but it claims to EVERYTHING (i.e. claims 100%) Hence, I reduced 1 star because this is incomplete, and the other star for misrepresentation.

Those same theories drove our invasion of Iraq 45 years later, championed by RAND affiliated actors such as Paul Wolfowitz, Donald Rumsfeld, and Zalmay Khalilzad. But RANDs greatest contribution might be its least known: rational choice theory, a model explaining all human behavior through self-interest. Through it RAND sparked the Reagan-led transformation of our social and economic system but also unleashed a resurgence of precisely the forces whose existence it denied religion, patriotism, tribalism.

author of reason?

Soldiers Of Reason may have been okay if it were the biography of Wohlstetter. As it is, it resembles someone who has visited the Louvre for five days and writes a book about what Europe is like.
To consider Wolfowitz and Perle as RANDites is absurd. C Rice came a bit closer, but not much. Rumsfeld was on the Board but only on the Board, and that was a long time ago.
There was never a fist fight in any manangement meeting. Shapley (a member of the National Academy of Science) and Belman were mathemeticians, not an economist and a physicist. The correct decription of RAND by Pravda was The Academy of Death and Destruction. These are minor errors and are perhaps to be expected in any book. It always is a plus, however, for authors to do their homwork.
The author makes RAND look like a group of wild eyed hawks bent on death and destruction without a thought for human lives or social consequences.. An assemblage of Dr Strangeloves. To imply that ethics and morals was a luxury that the researchers couldn't afford or chose not to address is an insult to the vast majority of RAND researchers.
My guess is that most of the real RANDites will gasp in horror at what is portrayed of the organization. Yes, a great deal of emphasis was on the cold war and how to fight it, but also how to avoid it. To imply that our current policy in the Middle East is a direct result of RAND is another absurdity. There may be many who have taken what they wish to further from some of the studies performed at RAND, but there are different interpretations and indeed different studies to the contrary. Those mentioned above as RANDites who never were, may have been influenced by Wohlstetter but their work should not be represented as part of the history of RAND and their philosophies differ considerably from the majority of RANDites of that era.
No mention was made of the System Development Division, comprised almost entirely of psychologists who studied much of what the author says never happened at RAND. The Division spun off and formed the System Development Corporation and rapidly outgrew the parent. How could someone doing a so called history of RAND not include this?
No mention was made of the tremendous contribution in Artificial Intelligence which had much of its beginning at RAND involving Newell, Shaw and Simon as well as Minsky from MIT who was a consultant.
The entire computing field including programming (linear, dynamic and heuristic) perhaps was furthered by RAND as much or more than any other organization including IBM. The first professional computing societies were originally headed by people such as Paul Armer, Willis Ware and others from RAND
Computing as we know it today was very largley a result of the early efforts at RAND.
The really historic contributions made by the Information Sciences Department and the Mathematics Department (later merged into one) were not mentioned.
But no, we hear almost only of how Herman and Albert and few others did such damage with their concept of rational choice.
Studies at RAND included the first (outside of the Secret Service ) study and design of Presidential protection and RAND played a key role in the security of the 1984 Olympics.
Machine translation and was largely inaugurated at RAND.
Tom Lincoln began some of the very first definitive work on the treatment of leukemia.
Much work was done to avoid unauthorized lanching of nuclear weapons and assisstance was given to the DOD in establishing what at the time was known as The Human Reliability Program to ensure the behavioral soundness of those with access to those weapons. Safeguards such as the launch enabling system was of real concern within the corporation and contributions were made to the Air Force to develop such a system.
Cost analysis and a myriad of other novel sophisticated management approaches in the various commands were presented and adopted by the Air Force.
The Logistics Department made many substantial contributions to the Air Force.
Many such studies resulted in almost monumental savings of tax dollars.
The role RAND played in counterterrorism was hardly recognized for its significance, particularly its role in counter nuclear terrorism. Brian Jenkins could well be called the father of counterterrorism in this country, not only in his and his team's continued studies and analysis
but in giving the rest of the various agencies (starting, at first, with the Department of State) a jump start in combatting this threat.
The New York City debacle was fairly well covered. The eight or so people who first presenteed the concept to the Mayor (not the other way around) at a breakfast at Gracie Mansion envisioned the same type of atmosphere that was enjoyed at RAND Santa Monica (and Washington). That was not to be, and the head of the effort was not a researcher of the parent corporation. Many thought that this doomed it from the beginning. The effort seemed to be more of a job shop than research. And while it was an experiment in what might be accomplished with a RAND- like approach to the problems and compexities of running a large city, it failed.
Almost no mention was made in the book to the contributions to the Health field. And there have been many.
There are countless other studies too numerous to mention, and contributions of a much more benign nature that Rand addressed that were not covered in the book.
Instead, we read continuously all about a few people (admittedly influencal) many not ever even RANDites, and get a picture that is certainly not representative of this great corporation. To do so sadly did a very major diservice to the RAND corporation and the many researchers who will remember its history in a completely different way.

Penetrating revisionist view of American foreign policy

First of all, the book is about a lot more than foreign policy, but that's what I find most interesting about RAND and what I think really shines in this compelling history. Yeah, yeah, there's social science that RAND did, too, and that's good to know, but where the writing really comes alive is with the great larger than life characters who were at the center of the Cold War -- people like Albert Wohlstetter, Herman Kahn, Bernard Brodie, Paul Wolfowitz, Daniel Ellsberg, Donald Rumsfeld, and on and on. A lot of the material has been glancingly covered elsewhere, but never has one book presented the whole story. And with the whole story in one place, it becomes shockingly clear what enormous influence RAND's "soldiers of reason" had in every administration for over 60 years.

It's a relief that for most of the book Abella just presents history -- story after story of all the players and their deeds (and more important, their incredibly influential ideas). It's also a relief that at the end Abella sums up the achievements and failings of RAND's systems analysis and approach to problems by stating: "the problem with rational choice theory is that it is not rational. It fails to comprehend the world as it is..." Exactly. One need look no further than Viet Nam (or Iraq!) for proof.

A very good secret history of American foreign policy during and after the Cold War.

Important and Thought-Provoking...

I came across Alex Abella's fascinating book in the LAX airport newsstand, moments before boarding my $230 Virgin America flight to Washington. After my late friend Kevin's disturbing RAND conference room memorial service, I simply had to read it cover-to-cover on the flight. It took me until somewhere over Ohio. I really could not put the book down. The desire to reduce all questions to a matter of numbers was one I had come across last week in my late father's 1941 diary. It turned out we had moved into a home of one of the the founders of RAND--J. Richard Goldstein--when we arrived in Santa Monica.

Coincidentally, a high school friend had been the son of RAND researcher Daniel Ellsberg, of Pentagon Papers fame. The cousin of someone I know worked for RAND after leaving the CIA. The girlfriend of another cousin of someone I know worked at RAND while on leave from the State Department. When I saw the book in the bookstore, I realized that I had known practically nothing about the "mother of all think-tanks." From the book I found out that the Hudson Institute was a bastard child of RAND, set up after Herman Kahn left the mother ship. The Albert Wohlstetter room at AEI is named after a RAND guru. And almost everyone who is anyone in Washington these days--especially the architects of America's Iraq and Afghanistan quagmires--seem to have some sort of RAND connection.

Yet so far as I know, there had been no book about RAND, until this. It explained a great deal, and I recommend it highly. It is about the possibilities--and limits--of operations research and systems analysis. Reading "Soldiers of Reason: The RAND Corporation and the Rise of the American Empire" helped me better understand the sudden and tragic death of my friend...

Must reading for anyone interested in the ways of Washington, or what President Eisenhower (apparently with RAND in mind) called "the military-industrial complex."
