Boreham rediscovered

I have had a copy of F.W. Boreham's Heavenly Octave on my shelf for years and never read it. After reading The Luggage of Life I have pulled it from the shelf and am now half way through it. Shame on me!

There are many things I like about Boreham's writing but what I like most is how he takes everyday situations and expressions and re-casts them in a new and fresh light. He extracts deep spiritual meaning from the simple things of life and is able to create in the reader's mind a world that is alive with messages from our heavenly Father. Part One chapter one,The Luggage of Life, had me hooked and there was no stopping after that.For me it really set the tone for everything that followed. I found myself saying,"Why didn't I see that?" The length of the chapters made it convenient to lay the book down and come back to it without the need for a review.It has pushed me in the direction of looking more closely at everyday things and then looking again to see what is beyond the obvious.

You can't go wrong with this one.

If you have never discovered Boreham, now's the time

Frank Boreham is a national treasure, world-wide. To read his essays and books is to live in the presence of someone who loved life and loved to share it. His writings are a joy to read... he had a great command of the English language as do few others. I "discovered" him last year in 2009 and wish I had known him all my life. He was one of the last students to pass through Spurgeon's ministerial school and was a missionary to Australia. You will not be disappointed with Boreham. His books are hard to find and sometimes the only recourse is to order from Australia. They are a good,lifelong investment for your spirit's health. May God bless someone to "discover" him too.

There is no other writer like this.

I was introduce to Frank Boreham years ago buy a book collector. He wrote upwards of 50 books but I have found only a few. He is a Christian writer so if that bothers you read his books anyway. I promise you, you will not find another author that uses language like he does. No matter what story he is telling it is hard not to impose your self alongside his characters as an eyewitness. Luggage of Life is a collection of stories that he writes surrounding his time in Australia and as a Pastor. There is literally no other author that takes me out of my surroundings like Boreham. Ive read a lot of the classics and easily see why they are classics. I don't understand why his works have not made that same category.

Let the Games begin

Not the Olympic Games, nor the ludus. Here we have an introduction to the way Greeks and Romans faced on humanity most ancient and perilous "game"...maybe battlefield is a more appropriate definition. We're talking about Love, sexual desire and the quest to obtain them (both or just one).

This is an extraordinary anthology of Greek and Roman erotic verse. But much more than that, it is a fabulous introduction on ancient customs regarding sexual life and the classical views on how they regarded sex and roles.

Form the Greek symposium where erastes tried to conquer their eromenos, to the much sought hetaeras where a man should look for pleasure (and not their wives). The comparative freedom women had in the Hellenistic world (compared to classical Greece), quite obvious in contemporary verses. To the living goddesses like Ovid's Corinna or Catullus's Lesbia, loved and hated at the same time.

This book provides a solid footstep for further study, with excellent footnotes, suggested reading and representative examples of Greek and Roman erotic verse. Obviously you should study a little classical history and mythology before embarking on this journey; most verses have several references to myths, legend and history.

From Greece you have short biographies and excerpts from (among others): Archilochus, Alkman, Mimnermos, Sappho, Ibycus, Anacreon, Theognis, Hipponax, Pindar, Bacchylides, Hermesianax, Asclepiades, Callimachus, Theocritus, Herodas, Machon, the Grenfell papirus, , Meleager.

A Fascinating Look at Ancient Verse

I picked this book up on a whim along with some other research materials on the subject of life in ancient Greece. I'm not sure really what I was expecting, but I was both surprised and delighted with what I got. The book comes with plenty of footnotes to help even the casual reader (like me) understand the significance of some of the more abstract verses...while other verses would be at home today on a roadhouse bathroom wall!

Great pocket guide to hunting for mushrooms, pictures are nice and crisp, details of mushrooms are in depth but at the same time also easy to understand for a novice. Check out my picture for a mushroom next to the description, it was spot on!

This year I suddenly realized how freakin' cool mushrooms are! (Or I'm just getting old.) For the past few months, in addition to scouring EVERYWHERE within a 3 mile radius of my West Seattle home, I've spent countless hours (days) searching Google for identification help, which I'm sure you know causes more harm than good at times.

I ordered this along with the Audobon Field Guide and they both arrived yesterday. Within minutes of opening this book, I identified 3 of the mushrooms sitting on my kitchen counter that I'd just spent half the day trying to figure out online! Pictures are great because they're color-accurate and show the angles I need, it's organized in a way that's meaningful to me as a beginner, and the descriptions gave me long-overdue insight into concepts I've struggled with such as taxonomy, toxicity effects, and how to tell the difference between an edible delight vs. a gut-wrenching nightmare. He even includes ridiculously simple recipes. Most importantly, as a mushroom noob, his non-condescending, light-hearted humor, and intuitive writing style gave me the confidence to feel like I can actually do this.

I really have enjoyed reading this book. I'm a casual mushroom observer, and just wanted to know more about the kinds I see on my walks. This book was everything I hoped it would be, and more. I loved learning more about mushrooms in general, and I love the humor and spirit of the book. I think I will buy the author's other book "Mushrooms Demystified" as well, because I enjoy the breadth and depth of his knowledge, as well as his writing style.
