F|r ihre Beantwortung ist das Hinzuziehen von Keilschriftquellen, die den Umgang mit Schmuck an K�nigsh�fen im mittel- und sp�tbronzezeitlichen Syrien dokumentieren, unumg�nglich. Dazu geh�rt eine Gruppe von Inventartexten aus dem K�nigspalast von Qa?na selbst, in denen die Sch�tze der Palastgottheiten notiert wurden. Diese werden in Elisa Rossbergers Arbeit detailliert ausgewertet und mit der arch�ologischen Evidenz aus der K�nigsgruft verglichen. Daraus ergeben sich M�glichkeiten, bisher ungekl�rte Begriffe mit konkreten Objekten, Materialien und ihrer Verarbeitung zu verbinden. Das Wissen |ber die Herstellung, Verwendung und Bedeutung von Schmuck in der Welt der Lebenden verhilft auch zu einem besseren Verst�ndnis seiner Funktion im Totenritual. Die in der K�nigsgruft Bestatteten wurden nur f|r einen begrenzten Zeitraum mit farbenpr�chtigen Textilien und wertvollem Schmuck in Bilder ihrer selbst verwandelt; bei der Umbettung in sekund�re Ruhest�tten wurde diese Ausstattung entfernt. Sch�nheit und Glanz dienten den Lebenden, aber sie spielten in der Welt der Toten keine Rolle.
