An Applicable Mandate for Modeling Science and Life!
By medfac
A. Ghosh, Dynamic Systems For Everyone
The broad emphasis of this encompassing offering is on the value of a systems, modeling approach to understanding and perhaps redefining the multitude of systems that surround us in our daily lives. It goes without saying that one must principally understand the elements of any process to accurately control and manage it. This is perhaps easiest in the engineering world where industrial processes are largely defined and ample examples of control principles and modeling are manifest. Insights that are afforded into other systems in the realms of economics, medicine, biology and energy/climatic problems are less well studied perhaps because of a bit of a void in recognizing the utility of a systems approach to mechanistic problems in these fields. Ghosh has provided some guidelines on how to approach these issues and refine ways we think about and predict their behavior in the real world.
I am a medical scientist whose works for over 35 years were in the field of neuroscience and more specifically that of repair of the injured brain at the molecular level. As we began to define mechanisms of cell death and how to rescue cells after injury, it became apparent that multiple pathways lead to cell death in the central nervous system after injury. Rescue of the different components would have benefited by modeling of the types Ghosh suggests. Many of these processes are evident in a series-parallel type of approach to beneficial cell rescue. Failure to account for the behavior at the molecular level of all of the components of these systems in similar time frame can result in catastrophic conclusions about how cell death occurs under normal and abnormal conditions. Therapeutic approaches need to be timed in such away that simultaneous effects on concurrent operating systems are maximized to achieve a beneficial outcome. One example is that invoking the presence of immune cells and their byproducts can have very positive effects on tissue and/or provoke the occurence of natural cell death. Appropriate models would have simplified the hypothetical approach to questions and experimental design. System hierarchy and favorable estimation of the time lags involved would have further improved .the process.
The applications through which Ghosh takes us reveals a quick and synoptic mind. Without several courses in Biomedical Engineering and students who emphasized this perspective, I would not have appreciated the utility of these approaches. A thorough reading of the book provides an interesting way to view many problems in our society- modeling often stimulates newer and valuable approaches.

An interesting and informative book on system thinking.
By Judith Rizzi
Excellent book ...very well written. Mr. Ghosh's world view of system thinking is truly unique. His description of how problems as diverse as youth violence and a shipboard cold water system can both be analyzed using well known system techniques. His use of feedback concepts and loop diagrams will be of interest to both technical and nontechnical readers. As an engineer, I found Chapter 7 on Distributed Intelligence and the use of decentralized structures very enlightening. I highly recommend this well written book.

Dynamic indeed - a Book well-worth reading!
By AKS
An extremely well written book in very logical understandable language - for both the specialist professional engineers as a manual or compendium, as well as for the general readers - to whom the principles apply in understanding the 'Interaction between Systems, Sub-systems & Environment' in so many different facets of life. The book emphasizes system thinking involving the integration of the very many sub systems to generate results greater than total of each sub-systems - and succeeds in creating that understanding!
